Project Suggestions
2
Proposal Requirements Specific scenarios Focus on visualization aspects –Clear visualization goals –Not just a copy of an existing technique –Clear sketches that are implementation - ready Detailed milestones
3
Biological Pathway Visualization Example Users are molecular biologists They need to look at biological pathways to see how proteins interact with each other. This will be implemented as a node-link graph.
4
Better scenario Jody is a graduate student studying the Ras12 protein. She needs determine which proteins are known to inhibit Ras12’s function and which proteins are in turn inhibited by Ras12. Jody then needs to identify which of Ras12’s inhibitors is most plentiful during periods of high cell growth.
5
Better description of solution Node-link graph where the nodes will be customized to represent properties of the proteins –Coloured by function using colour scheme X (picture) –Augmented with interaction: Mouse over a node visually highlights proteins that inhibit, promote, are inhibited by, and are promoted by the selected one. (Show picture) –Use existing layout algorithm foo because it has properties x, y, and z Use pictures! Another student should be able to implement the solution from your proposal.
6
Alternate solution (analysis project) Requirements for our application are: –User must be able to easily see proteins that inhibit Ras12 and are inhibited by Ras12 –etc Use existing programs X and Y to view our dataset. Do detailed comparison of X and Y and critically analyze them with respect to the requirements
7
Good milestones Oct 20 –Figure out how to use foo layout algorithm in the GraphToolkit. (Jane) –Implement colour picking algorithm for graph nodes (Joe) Oct 25 –Integrate colour picking algorithm with graph layout (Jane & Joe) Nov 1 –Implement mouse-over information for nodes & edges (Jane) –Prepare update presentation (Joe)
