IceTec Guðmundur Gunnarsson PUFFUN Kick-off meeting May 21, 2007
2
Primary function is : to transfer technology and expertise to business and industry, to assist companies in innovation, productivity and R&D IceTec
3
Organizational Chart Board General Director Quality Manager Assistant Director Adminis- tration Marketing Misc. services Finance Technological Development and Education Information and Counseling IMPRA One Stop Shop for Entrepre- neurs and SME’s IMPRA One Stop Shop for Entrepre- neurs and SME’s Materials and Environmental Technology Training and Management Consultancy Centre of Food Technology Centre of Chemical Analysis
4
IceTec IceTec – Technological Institute of Iceland IBRI – Icelandic Building Research Institute Agricultural University of Iceland (part of)
5
Merger of IceTec and IBRI IceTec and IBRI will merge on August 1, 2007 Nysköpunarsmiðstöð Íslands “Innovation center of Iceland”
6
IceTec Who are we? A governmental laboratory reporting to the Ministry of Trade and Industry We can participate in new development companies Traditional industries have been the main customers A group of 55 people in various fields 70% external income 30% gov. contribution l
7
Material and Product Testings Product and material testing of metals and polymers. NDT on metals Failure analyses
8
“Surface” projects Surfaces for the food industry Biofilm formation Together with Rf, Marel and Sæplast FUNCOAT – Enhanced functionality of self cleaning and antibacterial surface coatings – NICe project Glass or glased surfaces coated with titanium dioxide and silver Superhydrophilic, radicals generated destroys organic matter on surface Antobacterial (silver) NANOREP Scratch resistant coatings Self cleaning/easy to clean traffic signs
9
Equipment for surface analyses SEM – Scanning Eelctron Microscope, LEO Supra 25 AFM - Atomic Force Microscope, PSIA XE-100 Optical Profiling System – Solarius Viking CLA 400 Contact angle meter, KSV CAM 200 For surface energy calculations Surface energy of bacteria and materials
10
SEM of bacteria on surfaces PP on PE
11
Photocatalytic self cleaning surfaces Surface is coated with TiO 2 nanoparticles Irradiation with sunlight makes the surface superhydrophilic Radicals formed on the surfaces breaks down organic matter on the surface http://www.newkast.or.jp/english/museum/index.html
12
Surface properties of bacteria First step in bacterial adhesion is partly governed by surface properties/energy of bacteria and materials Surface energy can be estimated from contact angle measurements of bacterial lawns and materials with different liquids Pseudomonas putida (PP) is a hydrophobic bacteria Explains why it is so widely found in fish processing plants Adheres better to hydrophobic than hydrophilic materials Listeria monocytogenes is a hydrophilic bacteria Has lower tendency than PP to adhere to all materials
