1 Problem 5.2: Flagpole Estimate BE1100 Lab Assignment #4 By: Ann Marie O’Malley Due February 3 rd, 2004
2
2 The Problem Estimate the height of 2 flagpoles on your campus. Assume the sun is not shining and that the bases of the poles are at ground level (not on top of a building) and that the bases are accessible. – A. Do the estimate for Pole #1 where you have available a carpenter’s level, straight edge, protractor and masking tape. Pole #1 sits on level ground. – B. For Pole #2 You have a carpenter’s level, straight edge, protractor and 12’ tape. The ground around Pole #2 slopes away from the base.
3
3 Assumptions Pole #1: Ground approximately level around flagpole base. Pole #2: Ground has constant slope from base to measuring point.
4
4 Procedure for Pole #1 Pole #1: – 1. Place a piece of masking tape at my height on the flagpole. – 2. Choose position about flagpole height away from the base and measure elevation angles to top of pole ( ) and to tape ( ). (See Figure 1) Figure 1
5
5 Procedure for Pole #2 Figure 3 Pole #2: – 1. Choose point about flagpole height away from base and measure elevation angles to top ( ) and to base – 2. Measure distance (d) from chosen point to base. (See Figure 3)
6
6 Data Pole #1: – 1. My height is known to be 6’ 1” – 2. Level, straight edge, and protractor can serve as a system for measuring elevation angles. (See Figure 2) – 3. = 7.5°, = 48° Pole #2: – 1. = 3.5° – 2. = 44° – 3. d = 93’ 4” Figure 2
7
7 The Solution for Pole #1 Approximate h = 51’
8
8 The Solution for Pole #2 Approximate h = 84’
9
9 Conclusion The height of Pole #1 is approximately 51’ The height of Pole #2 is approximately 84’
