Chemistry Résumé What’s a résumé ? - To track your success in Unit 1 - It will show you how well you did on each GLE What’s a GLE ?
11
The BIG GOAL: 80% Mastery of ALL GLEs
12
Why 80% Mastery? Graduate high school Pass the GEE Science Exam Graduate college Solve your own problems $$$
13
If I didn’t get mastery, is that it? No! 1.Get 20 min tutoring 2.Retake the GLEs you didn’t master 3.Raise your grade 4.Increase future opportunities!
14
What to do??? For those who took the Unit 6 test, PICK UP YOUR TRACKING SHEET FROM THE FRONT!!! Get calculators from the bin. Return them when finished Complete ALL parts of tracking sheet Raise hand to ask questions
15
Done with Unit 6… Unit 7: Gases!!! Test this Friday
16
Independent variable Cause What we CHANGE
17
Students placed equal amounts of bread mold on 12 identical plates containing the same amounts and types of nutrients. Four plates were kept at 0°C, four were kept at 45°C, and four were kept at 22°C (room temperature). The plates were examined after five days.

Melissa is a scientist that works for Boeing to make airplanes. She creates an experiment to try using a new type of metal just created by chemists. First, she makes an airplane wing made out of the normal, old metal. Then she makes a second airplane wing that 50% old metal, and 50% new metal. Then she makes a third airplane wing that is has no old metal, and is 100% made of new metal. She then tests how strong each wing is by using a machine that bends the wings.
19
Dependent variable Effect What we MEASURE
20
Hypothesis IF independent variable, THEN dependent variable. IF cause, THEN effect.
21
Experimental group The group we change
22
Control group The group we leave like it was, in its original form
23
Conclusions Pay attention Remember: CAUSE → EFFECT Lines intersecting on a graph means the values are equal at that point It’s all about relationships!
24
Conclusions Incubation Temperature of Turtle Eggs Versus Sex of Hatchlings Four groups of 25 eggs TemperatureNumber of Males Number of Females Eggs not hatched Group 1262122 Group 22813111 Group 3301195 Group 4321204
25
Done Early? Start on homework Work quietly, be respectful
26
QUIZ- hypothesis, variables, groups Work silently and alone for full credit
27
Sum up What did we learn today? HW: Top Ten: –How’d we do?
