WATER What in the world… All the WATER is gone!!! This satellite image was taken this morning by NASA satellites :

Getting to the bottom of this… We spoke to President Obama this morning and he told us not to worry…. So what happened?

The President Says … Today, the X-Men decided to play a prank on each other. Storm created a huge wind vortex to remove all the earth’s water. She was showing off her skills to Professor X. But, now she has a HUGE problem. She forgot to accurately label her water samples and now she cannot remember where the water goes on earth!

But, you need a few words of wisdom… Remember the hydrologic cycle: – What step did Storm perform to remove the water? (usually the SUN provides the energy for this step) – What happens when too much water condensates in the clouds? (it may have happened this morning…) – What type of water dominates the hydrosphere? What percentage does this water account for?

Wait a second…I really do not know much about salinity…Tell me before I get angry! SALINITY is a measure of dissolved solids (in grams) in water (1000 milliliters). Scientists commonly use the notation parts per thousand (ppt). Salinity, like temperature, affects density by increasing the mass of water. – So, if salinity increases then density will ____________? Ocean water ranges from 33 – 37 ppt. River water and ground water can be slightly saline (0 – 10 ppt). Does freshwater have a salinity ?

So, now you are prepared to help Storm… Use your superhero science skills and help her rightfully replace the earth’s water. With great (scientific) power, comes great (and a grade for) responsibility….. 12:30pm But, there this is TIME sensitive – You only have until 12:30pm before the water precipitates. Go forth with your equipment, proper labels, and perfect measuring techniques to SOLVE…

The CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING WATER!
