Fourier Transform Interferometry Noah Block Project Advisor: Roger Easton

Overview Background Purpose Design and Methods Data Processing Conclusion

Background The design of the interferometer was created by Eric Sztanko. His project successfully found the spectrum of a single wavelength source. The reason that Eric Sztanko did not finish his original proposal of finding a multiple wavelength source was that he did not have enough time. Most of the time was dedicated to building the interferometer.

Purpose The objective for continuing Eric Sztanko’s experiment this year is to develop a method to find the spectrum of a complex object within resolution limits of the system.

Design of Instrument Motor Control Object Beamsplitter Stationary Mirror Mirror attached to motor 20 mm Camera Monitor Computer

Interference Patterns The fringes move when the mirror moves, this creates different interference patterns with relation to the mirror distance. This creates an interferogram.

Data Processing N=8 FFT The interferogram and spectrum taken from Eric Sztanko’s work Interferogram Spectrum

Binning of Pixels Reason for Binning: if the mirror vibrates or moves, a ray might get shifted Pixels Mirror at 2 positions

Conclusion To expand on the research already done so that the spectrum of a complex object can be calculated.
