What is PASS ( Peer Assisted Study Sessions)? Derives from the American Supplemental Instruction (SI) module Utilises the experience and expertise of higher year volunteer students, by training them as facilitators to support a lower year student Encourage a student centred approach to learning through peer interaction Leaders facilitate discussion, they do not teach Provide an additional mechanism for communication and feedback between staff and students School of Politics and International Studies FACULTY OF EDUCATION, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW

PASS in POLIS To provide deliberative space within the module Improve the student experience Embedded within a level 1 module running in semester 1 (20 credits) 2 nd and 3 rd year student volunteers to facilitate practical's Weekly TIMETABLED 1 hour slots for all students Students had to opt out rather than opt in PASS was not compulsory Academic and admin coordinators (module leader and PASS coordinator) Each group (approx 20 students) meets with 2 PASS leaders for 1hour/week Free agenda, but discussion points where suggested each week -Non module related topics (social, pastoral) -Module Related Topics -Academic topics (presentations, deadline lines, lectures, course work, study skills) School of Politics and International Studies FACULTY OF EDUCATION, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW

School of Politics and International Studies FACULTY OF EDUCATION, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW Timeline of Pilot Scheme FMAMJJASONDJ Advertising scheme to all eligible students Meeting for all interested students Presentation from students and staff already running the scheme at Manchester University delivered to staff and interested students Advertising scheme to all eligible students Contacting students who have expressed an interest regarding training session in September Meetings and communication with team from Manchester University Training Day for PASS Leaders Meeting for all PASS leaders and module team Weekly debrief sessions for all Student Leaders and Module team Observation of PASS sessions Thank you lunch for all Student Leaders and Module Team Focus Groups and evaluation of scheme

Outcomes of PASS PASS Leaders Personal development opportunities Recognition and reward Skills development – problem solving, public speaking, communication, persuasion, negotiation, leadership, teamwork, preparation, presentation POLIS and Module Level Generated real time feedback about the module and generic issues to POLIS Improved the student experience Widening access to a diverse student body Student Level Gives them a better understanding of the module Provide a non-threatening environment Provides support and guidance School of Politics and International Studies FACULTY OF EDUCATION, SOCIAL SCIENCES AND LAW

The future of PASS in POLIS Integrate PASS into the POLIS theory network Apply PASS to additional modules within POLIS? Funding (£5k per intro module) POLIS 16 sessions x 11 weeks = £28 per session (similar to a tutorial)
