4. In 1968 over 10,000 students from Roosevelt, Wilson, Lincoln and Garfield high schools walked out of school protesting their demands. It started in 1968 after the LAUSD failed to meet the needs of Chicano students.

6. After LAUSD failed to meet student demands the students organize themselves with the help of the Brown Berets, some teachers, and the support of politicians like Bobby Kennedy. On March 8, 1968 the Brown Berets came in the schools and yelled “Its time, its time to walkout”.

7. There were very severe consequences for the students who walked out, and the teachers who helped. Student’s rights were violated by the police, and were brutally beaten. One teacher named Sal Castro was fired and was charge with conspiracy for planning the walkouts.

8. After the walkouts students received a better education, E.O.P. program in college, college corner, more opportunities to go to college, more bilingual teachers, a Chicano Studies course, Mexican food and better school conditions.

10. Roosevelt High is the 2 nd most populated school in the nation with 5057 students in a 3-track system.

16. Education vs. Incarceration California has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world. In the last 20 years California has built over 20 prisons and only 1 university. California is #1 in prison spending and #41in education spending in the U.S.
