2 2 Where did C-Print evolve from? u Grant funding (from 1993-present) u Funds used for research, development, and dissemination u Started as an abbreviation system and training materials (now software and online training)

3 3 How was C-Print originally distributed? u Federal funds from the U.S. Department of Education supported distribution of abbreviation dictionary, training materials, and research findings u Additional funding provided by Northeast Technical Assistance Center and Postsecondary Education Programs Network u Drawback – difficult transition from “free” to charging a fee

4 4 At what point did we have to make a decision? u Conclusion of federal funding u Existing “customer base” (customer support, ethical commitments, etc.) u Considerations for keeping at RIT –Quality control –Institutional image –Research and development plans

5 5 What did we need to start distributing from RIT? u Intellectual Property Protection – copyright, trademark, patent u End Use License Agreements u US Export Control –Regulation classification from Department of Commerce –Implementation of export control management procedure u Marketing/distribution plan –Price structure –Web site, promotional and informational materials (order forms, brochures, etc.) –Packaging and payment plans –Other

6 6 Other things to consider… u Is product “self-sustaining” or is there a budget line supported by your college/division? (salaries, equipment, development, facilities, supplies, etc.) u What kind of support can you expect from your college/division? u Are there ethical considerations? (Is this a one-time production; Does it require continued development; Etc.) u Is there a business plan? (Marketing, growth, competition, etc.)

7 7 Other things to consider… cont’d u What is the long-term goal? u How will growth of the product fit within the mission of RIT/your college/division? u Who are the authors and what is the distribution of revenues, etc.? u Is there a person/position responsible for product distribution in your college/division and what are the existing protocols?
