2 Christian Leadership Leadership and it’s bottom line The need for effective leadership (a) Necessity for church growth (Acts 6. 1-7) (b) the problem of doing Three dimensions of effective leadership (a) Purpose dimension (John 17.4) I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do (b) People dimension (Mark 3.14) 1/16

3 He appointed 12 designating them as apostles, that they might be with him and that He might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons Person dimension (1 John 2.6) Who ever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did. Definition of a leader A leader is a person who influences people to accomplish a purpose Who is a leader? It is possible to have a position of leadership without functioning as a leader Christian Leadership 2/16

4 It is possible to function as a leader without having a position of leadership A spiritual leader is Christ centered What leadership is not? Some thing you are born with A rare skill found only at the top of organizations Status or official position “I am my position” A series of behavior patterns or personality traits A combination of qualities like charisma, intelligence etc., The divine right of kings and Pastors Christian Leadership 3/17

5 What is leadership? (A) Leadership is exercising true authority 1. E xpertise, facility, capacity – insight in to the things of God 2. A consequence of obedience and integrity 3. U sed to build people up, to mend them, to serve them 4. E videnced by the conditions of the disciples Christian Leadership 4/16

6 (B) Leadership is a cultivated influence people Developed within the contexts of relationships Existing within the bounds of a common purpose of vision Increasing with each successive and positive impact in another’s life Based on meaningful history It’s all about credibility Christian Leadership 5/16

I ntroduction The need for effective leadership To aspire to leadership is an honorable ambition ( 1 Tim 3.1) Here is a trust worthy saying, if any one sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task Christian Leadership 7/16

9 Purpose related Characters 1. P ersistence (Phil 3. 12-14) Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do; forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus Christian Leadership 8/16

10 People related characters 1. Servant hood (Mathew 20. 25-28) Jesus called them together and said you know that the rulers of the gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you, instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many Christian Leadership 9/16

11 A servant leader leads through service and not position A servant leader leads for the good of others A servant leader leads by example A servant leader is servant by nature and not role Understands the needs of others ( Phil 2. 3-4) Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others Christian Leadership 10/16

12 Personal life characters 1. C onsistent example (1 Cor 4.16) Therefore, I urge you to imitate me (1 Cor 11.1) Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ 2. Self mastery (Phil 3.21) who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body Christian Leadership 11/16

13 Virile private life (Mat 6 1-18) Private prayer life, giving, fasting etc.,) Confidence ( Titus 2. 12-13) It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self controlled upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope, the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ Teach ability (2 Tim 2.2) the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entreat to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. 14 Positive attitude (Ro 12.3) By the grace given me I say to every one of you. Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. Faith (Mark 4.40) Jesus said to His disciples, why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? Christian Leadership 13/16

15 Team building: When one plus one is equal to three? Organization or team? The organization process 1. D efine the task (Ex 3.8) I have come to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land in to a good and a spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey Christian Leadership 14/16

16 Designate the leader (Ex 30.10) So now go, I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites out of Egypt Divide the responsibility (Ex 18) Jethro plan Vance Lombardi on building a winning team, said (a) know the basics (b) practice, practice, practice © love each other Christian Leadership 15/16

17 Characteristics of an effective team Shared burden (Numbers 11. 16,17) The Lord said to Moses “bring me 70 of Israel’s elders, who are known to you as leaders and officials among people. Have them come to the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with you. I will come down and speak with you there…… Christian Leadership 16/16
