Webinar Re-cap Career Renegade: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love Amy McAuliffe Cooper, ONWARD Career Advisor MBA, CPRW (Certified Professional Resume Writer) Content source: November 18, 2010 FREE webinar Facilitator: Paul Simon Speaker: Jonathan Fields (http://www.jonathanfields.com)

About the Speaker, Jonathan Fields Started his career as a lawyer at a big firm in NYC, paid 6 figures, a “power job” involving crazy work hours and caused physical pain leading to a serious infection -- his wake up call to change. He became a personal trainer earning $12/hour, learned the fitness business, opened his own facility which he grew and then sold and took a year off to write before learning and growing his yoga practice. On 10/10/01, he signed a lease to open a yoga studio in downtown NYC. In the aftermath of the 9-11 tragedy, Jonathan opened the studio relief workers for free. In 7 years, he grew this studio to a great “yuppy yoga” business, pulled back his personal interest to allow the staff to take over and sold the business in Dec 2008. In his own words, “I’ve evolved, taken a lot of purposeful risks and now, in addition to being a serial lifestyle-industry entrepreneur, I’ve figured out a way to earn a nice living doing a variety of things I love to with people I love to be around.” For the rest of the details, check out: http://www.jonathanfields.com/blog/about/

How To Create Opportunity Answer this question: What makes you come ALIVE? (An alternative to the more daunting questions normally posed: What is My Life Purpose?) List 10 things you think would be great to do and figure out how to make money doing these by looking for GAPS in the marketplace

The Five Key Areas To Evaluate for Yourself 1.Mission: What makes you feel alive? Make an inventory of all the things that do. 2.People: Do NOT skip this stage! People do influence your ability to thrive at work. Review your past experiences in school, clubs, businesses and determine where you felt alive, what couldn’t you get enough of, what were the qualities present in the people surrounding you? 3.Culture: Fed by People. Where do you love to be? In a fast moving startup or a slow, steady organization? Do you like creative environments or linear, logical entities? 4.Setting: Culture feeds the setting. Do you need windows? Is light important to your well being? The physical environment is important to your ability to come alive. 5.Day2Day: What tasks are part of my day? Are you typing, writing, talking, reading? What are you doing in the day2day?

Resolve Elements of Conflict Greatest opportunities will be present when you control what you do – entrepreneurship Redeploy your passion in a higher end market – An struggling artist found a means to make good money by designing cupcakes and cakes Mine the Gaps … What is missing? – Information/Education: Is it lacking in an area where you feel alive? Provide it, write about it. – Product : Example cited was a skidless yoga towel leading to development of Yogitoes business – Community: A stay home mom and skilled art teacher created a franchise based business called Young Rembrandts to provide art to young children

How To Test Ideas Online – Google the fringe numbers, are there listings for what you are thinking about, how many, are there ads on the page related to this? If so, an opportunity is present! Books, magazines, clubs? What or where are they in pain? Use the Pain points to create solutions – Ally with market pain, offer a solution and drive change by creating a business
