Police thought he was a serial rapist they'd been looking for. They said they thought he was reaching for a gun. Four police officers fired 41 bullets, hitting him 19 times. In December 1999, it was announced that the trial would be held in Albany, in upstate New York, because the officers might not be able to receive a fair trial in New York City. 41 Shots Created by Mike Clark 19 October 2004

The Task The purpose of this project will be for you to research the killing of Amadou Diallo by members of the NYPD's Special Crimes Unit. You will read various articles, examine political cartoons, listen to a song written by Bruce Springsteen, and watch a video of the song being performed “Live” in New York City. After researching the Diallo slaying, listening to the song, and watching the video you will write two (2) papers. The Process Day 1: Research the killing of Amadou Diallo. Examine both articles and political cartoons found on the internet. ARTICLES POLITICAL CARTOONS Day 2: Watch and listen as Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band perform the song “41 Shots” Live in New York City. Discuss the song and the reaction of the New York City Police in attendance as the song is performed. The Process Day 3: Write a one (1) page paper defending the actions of the New York City Special Crimes Unit in the Diallo case. Use information you learned from researching the case to make your defense. You may not agree with their actions, but you must defend the officers from the New York City Special Crimes Unit. Day 4: Write a one (1) page paper critiquing the slaying of Amadou Diallo by members of the New York City Special Crimes Unit. The information you learned researching the case should support your position. Conclusion By completing this WebQuest, students will have learned about the Amadou Diallo case. In addition to learning about a specific case, students will understand that racial profiling exists in our society. They will also realize that certain high profile cases inspire celebrities, such as Bruce Springsteen, to speak out against racial profiling. This WebQuest, while not directly addressing state standards, may be one of the most valuable uses of instructional time. In America, we certainly need to stress the importance of harmony among people of all races. This WebQuest is powerful in it’s ability to provoke thoughts relative to that task. Teacher Notes This WebQuest has been completed by a variety of students in several courses at the high school level. Students in Computer Applications and Health courses (grade 9) enjoyed the WebQuest but their one page reports were not as sound as those of the Computer Applications II (Grade 10, 11, and 12) students who completed the WebQuest. Naturally, when examining the Diallo case, students reflected on other cases of racial profiling. The violence and brutality which many times accompanies it was found to be unacceptable by most. In a time when our society questions the direction and attitudes of young people it was refreshing to learn that their sense of right and wrong, at least in this case, was commendable. Personally, it was a pleasure to guide the students through this WebQuest. They took a mature approach to the assignment and researched the topic more thoroughly than I had originally thought they would.
