1
Present status and future developments of the European Scanning System Cristiano Bozza European Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006
2
Present Status - Hardware Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 Hardware based on commercial components Hardware configuration stable since 3 years > 15 working microscopes like this, more coming
3
Present Status - Software Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 All algorithms are implemented in SW Modular approach that allows easy evolution
4
Present Status - Software Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 High level software – distributed computing Born to work in a world-wide Collaboration Natively uses DB as the only storage system
5
Present Status – DB Support Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 The ESS works using data files only for temporary data Authentication, system parameters and configurations are stored only in DB Data stored and documented in DB Availability Portability Safety Ease of use
6
Present Status – Performances Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 Scanning speed = 20 cm 2 /h/side Efficiency = 93% on CERN-refreshed plates, = 90% on TONO-refreshed plates Automatic procedures available: Scanback (93% fill factor) Scanforth (93% fill factor) TotalScan
7
Present Status - Achievements Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 Pion interaction location and study Multiple scattering analysis Vertex reconstruction Neutrino vertex location and study (PEANUT)
8
Future develoments – Outlook Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 Scanning speed = 100 cm 2 /h/side by larger field of view and higher processing power (several Odyssey boards/microscope can be put even now) High level code written in.NET does not need recompiling or modification for 64-bit processors Performances of high level code scale with disk and CPU speed increase
9
Future develoments – Outlook Cristiano Bozza Salerno Emulsion Group Nagoya Dec 2006 Current ESS tuned to work on OPERA plates Thanks to modular design, the system is easy to retune for other situations Shared know-how among many European people allows to increase development power
