1. Definitions - Abet ABET Definition of Engineering Design[1][1] Process of devising a system or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision-making process, in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Fundamental elements :Establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation. Engineering design includes development of creativity, use of open- ended problems, use of modern design theory and methodology, formulation of design problem statements and specifications, consideration of alternative solutions,. Include a variety of realistic constraints such as economic factors, health and safety, hazop studies, environment. 1. KSU- College of Engineering The Senior Design Sequence is the most important challenge of the Senior Year. Focuses on the application of the basic science, mathematics, engineering and design skills taught in earlier courses and labs to a real-life application of product design, or process improvement. Students are guided at the various stages of a the design project. Advisors serve as mentors, consultants and evaluators Objectives: Excellent project- Employment- prizes-

2. Objectives- outcomes Course Objectives Enable students to synthesize the knowledge and skills acquired in their undergraduate curriculum. Opportunity to carry out a significant design project. Expose the students to address a broad range of constraints performance, economic, manufacturability, sustainability, social, safety, environmental, and ethical.. Enable students to apply engineering tools/techniques to design problems. Broaden skills in team work, critical thinking, communication, planning and scheduling through design project. Impress on the students the importance of technical communications. (oral written).

[d] Identify and formulate the problem and clarify objectives of the project [c, e] Conduct a literature survey on the project topic ( internet, library and other sources) to retrieve relevant information and data needed,. [i] Apply standards and appropriate constraints, such as economic factors, safety, manufacturability, sustainability, ethics, environmental and social impact. [c] Produce engineering calculations in support of the design. [a, k] Use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools to carry out the design project. [k] Test results and interpretation of test results, presentation, and final report. [b, k] Produce progress and final design reports and a poster as part of the deliverable [g] Deliver progress and final oral presentations for their project. 3 Project proposal CHE 499 Project Decription Form Student Name : Student No Supervisor name: I PROJECT TITLE: (plant design project) II PROBLEM STATEMENT (Must be related to plant design and include Energy and mass balances calculations, design of major equipment, cost estimation of the whole plant, safety and environmental analysis of the plant), Objective: State clearly the objectives of the project Present the main expected deliverables III WORK PLAN Specify the main phases of the project and tasks to be performed Give briefly the methodology/approach to be used in the work

3.Project Proposal It should be a design project (Capstone design project). The project can be suggested from advisors, a group of students, or an industry/sponsor Should satisfy the ABET requirements and mainly give the students opportunities to solve real life and open- ended problems.

3. PROJECT PROPOSAL PROJECT MUST BE RELATED TO A KNOWN PROCESS WITH AN AVAILABLE FLOW SHEET. GROUP PROJECT: NUMBER OF STUDENT PER PROJECT IS 2-6. GROUP PROJECT MUST BE JUSTIFIED AND TASKS OF EACH STUDENT MUST BE WELL PRECISED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROJECT. A COPY OF THE PROPOSAL MUST BE ATTACHED IN THE FINAL PROJECTS

4.Project Requirements Students will be asked to meet their supervisors (Just after project assignments). Students will be asked to attend some lectures organized and scheduled by the project committee as part of the project. The project committee fixes the dates of the oral examination at the beginning of the term. A comprehensive guidelines related to the preparation of the report is available and can be loaded from the department site.

4.Project Requirements The advisor(s) will, - Meet with the students regularly every week -supervise students - approve the schedule of the different tasks -control the progress of the project -assess students individually -make sure that the team keeps the project binder up-to-date -correct the final report and approve the submission of the project.

4. Project Requirements - PROJECT MUST INCLUDE DESIGN CALCULATION. AT LEAST TWO MAJOR EQUIPMENT MUST BE FULLY DESIGNED PER STUDENT. OTHER EQUIPMENT MUST BE SIZED. BASIC CHEMICAL ENG EQUIPMENT MUST BE INCLUDED ALL DESIGN CALCULATIONS MUST BE MADE BY HAND AND FULLY EXPLAINED AND JUSTIFIED. SOFTWARE PACKAGES CAN BE USED ONCE HAND CALCULATIONS ACHIEVED. CLEAR ECONOMIC STUDY MUST BE MADE. ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY AND HAZOP ISSUES MUST BE CLEARY COVERED FOR THE APPROPRIATE PLANT AND PRODUCT. A POSTER MUST BE PREPARED AND SUBMITTED AT THE END OF THE TERM.

5 FINAL REPORT FORMAT 5.2 TYPING SPECIFICATIONS Page Format Line Spacing: one and half spacing Font Size: 12 point for the body text, maximum of 14 point Boldfor section headings Left/Right Margins: 2.54 cm Top/Bottom Margins: 2.54 cm Page Limit The page limit for the body of Final Project report is 50-80. There is no page limit to Appendices. Title Page Title of the project, followed by names of team members, department, Fall/Spring AY 201x – 201x, and date of the submission. All equations must be numbered

5 FINAL REPORT FORMAT 5.3 FIGURES AND TABLES ALL FIGURES, TABLES AND GRAPHICS SHOULD BE INSERTED ON SEPARATE PAGES CLOSE TO WHERE THEY ARE DESCRIBED AND MUST BE NUMBERED. FIGURES CAPTIONS SHOULD BE BELOW THE FIGURES. TABLES CAPTIONS SHOULD BE ABOVE THE TABLES. REFERENCES:A LIST OF REFERENCES MUST BE PROVIDED AT THE END OF THE REPOR AND SHOULD BE ARRANGED IN THE ORDER OF CITATION IN THE TEXT. NUMBER REFERENCE CITATIONS CONSECUTEVLY IN SQUARE BRACKETS [1]. REFER SIMPLY TO THE REFERNCE NUMBER [2]. THE REFENCE MUST BE COMPLETE AND PRECISE eg: - NAME OF AUTHOD (BOOK, ENCYCLOPEDIA); Title, volume, pagination, year month, editor, electronic address if any.

5 FINAL REPORT FORMAT Abstract Abstract should introduce the reader to your project and the desired outcome or goal. The rest of the abstract should be used to summarize your results. What have been your major breakthroughs? Did you complete your tasks on time ? Keep the abstract concise – you can give the details in the body of the report. Body of Report The body of the report is limited to 80 pages, including the references. At the minimum, it should include the sections listed as follows, Components of the Report Body –Background and Problem description (selection of process…) –Mass and energy balance –Design and sizing of equipment, (Assumptions, theories, calculation, discussions of results and validation) –Economic analysis, Budgets and Schedule (pay back period, rate of return etc..) –Realistic constraints: Safety, Environmental, Hazop and Ethical Impacts. – Conclusions –References The Background and Problem description section should introduce the reader to the topic of your project with an intial executive summary. Design and sizing are the most important section that presents detail on design approaches, including design feasibility study and considerations for alternatives.

5 FINAL REPORT FORMAT 5.4 CALCULATIONS ALL CALCULATIONS MUST BE HAND CALCULATIONS, DETAILED, EXPLAINED AND REFERRED TO FIGURES AND ILLUSTRATIONS WHERE NECESSARY. PACKAGE SOFTWARE CAN BE USED IN ADDTION TO HAND CALCULATION BUT MUST NOT REPLACE HAND CALCULATIONS. ALL SYMBOLS MUST BE DEFINED IN NOMENCLATURE -UNITS UNITS SYMBOLS SHOULD BE USED WITH MEASURED QUANTITIES, 6KG, 3LBM, 51SECS USE SAME SYSTEMS OF UNITS THROUGHOUT ALL THE REPORT (SI UNITS, BRITISH UNITS

6 ASSESMENTS 6.3 The Oral Presentation Each team will make a 25-30 minute presentation to the examination Graduation Project Committee, 45- 60minute time blocks. Number of slides should correspond on the time allocated. All team members must have a speaking part in the presentation and be available for questions after the talk. It is strongly recommended that each team give a timed practice presentation to their faculty advisor prior to the committee presentation.

6 ASSESMENTS Prizes Best projects will benefit prizes, participation in College, University, National and International competitions.
