Update on Self-Pinched Transport Simulations D. V. Rose and D. R. Welch Mission Research Corp. General Atomics, 7/1/02
2
We continue to work towards understanding the beam transport equilibrium and improve transport efficiency New: –Added multiple plasma ion species to calculations –Added beam temperature profile (reduce “evaporation” losses –Continuing examination of optimal beam matching for good transport in “super”-pinch mode.
3
Equilibrium studies… Examine plasma electron and plasma ion evolution in the presence of a rigid beam (no beam dynamics) Simulations use an “infinitely” massive beam ion with the same charge state (+65) and ionization cross-sections as previous runs
4
Sample Results for a 3-mm Rigid Beam Beam ions Plasma Electrons
5
Density profiles as a function of distance from the beam head and velocity distributions obtained: radial ion velocities consistent with channel hydro limits Plasma Ions Neutral Density Plasma Ions
6
Contours of rB show some diffusion of the return current on these short time scales r b = 3 mm, I b = 65 kA (electrical) = +65 n g = 65 mtorr Electron speed dist.:
7
Simulations with finite-mass beam ions (Pb+65) and radial temperature profiles suggest less evaporative losses. Beam Density (LOG) @ 5 ns Beam Particle Positions @ 5 ns T b-perp = 12 keV
