1
Constructing a Case for a Proposition International Debate Education Association
2
Propositions A proposition is sometimes called a resolution, a motion, or simply a debate topic. Propositions can take several forms but we will focus only on propositions of evaluation and policy. A proposition of evaluation is one that attaches a value judgment to some object, person, institution, or concept. A proposition of policy is one that supports or rejects a proposed course of action.
3
Thesis Ordinarily a proposition is not specific enough to allow for a productive debate. Debaters narrow the proposition by stating their thesis or main idea: – –the thesis allows the proposition to set the frame of the debate Proposition of evaluation, – –the thesis is usually a simple sentence developed by an outline of a value object and criteria for distinctions Proposition of policy – the thesis is further developed by an outline of a proposed course of action.
4
The Case Stated simply, a case is one or more arguments designed to support the debaters’ thesis.
5
Developing a case for a proposition of evaluation Describe the object, person, institution, or concept to be evaluated. Select a value--the goal of the debate is to achieve or enhance the value. The value should come from the resolution. – –e.g. If the value is cultural autonomy then you will want a case that relates to cultural autonomy and you will want to prove to the adjudicators your interpretation best improves cultural autonomy Select a criterion--a means to measure/filter how you have achieved your value Relate case arguments through the criterion to the value – –Relations using cause and effect – –Relations using analogy
6
Value Case Example Resolution: This house values the post-1860 history of Yuan Ming Yuan over its pre-1860 history. Value--suggestions? –Cultural Autonomy/Memory Criterion/Case (how we measure the value in relationship to the case arguments) –Preservation of the existing Yuan Ming Yuan improves cultural memory

Developing a case for a proposition of policy Policy propositions suggest a change from current actions. A proposition of policy often argues a current situation needs to be changed. Typical format: – –Problem (or harm or ill): explain the bad things occurring in the status quo – –Plan (or cure or solution): describe some course of action (a plan) that you would propose which is consistent with the proposition – –Explain how your plan will solve for the problem Present one or more advantages of your plan over the current policy – –Advantages based on cause and effect reasoning – –Advantages based on analogy – –Advantages are additional to solving the problem
