Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 1Spring Quarter 2004 Engineering H193A Demolding of Chips Using Inventor for Chip Design Project Management Week 3 Day 1

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 2Spring Quarter 2004 Safety Issues Silicon wafers = Glass –They will cut you if broken. –Worse, the SU-8 will flake off and contaminate your chip. Be very careful in the following steps!

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 3Spring Quarter 2004 Demolding Process Wear Gloves to avoid contaminating the chip. Do the lid first to get a feel for the force involved. The PDMS has cured to itself as well as the petri dish and wafer, removing it is a SLOW process. First - cut around the edge of the dish to separate the PDMS from the side. Second - work on one edge and pry it up enough to grasp with your fingers. Third - SLOWLY and PATIENTLY pull the PDMS away from the petri dish.

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 4Spring Quarter 2004 Demolding Procedure When finished with demolding, you may exchange your petri dish and wafer for a clean petri dish to store your chip. If you break your chip you will have to carefully work to remove as much of the SU-8 as possible and hope that the channels aren't contaminated.

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 5Spring Quarter 2004 Some Design Hints See the Chip Design Guidelines on the Nano Design Project web page for some specifics. Yosef will present a general overview of using Inventor to design your chips.

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 6Spring Quarter 2004 Managing the Project Making a Schedule Team meetings –Agendas –Minutes –Decisions –Assignments Checking the schedule Revising the schedule Anticipating problems Solving problems

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 7Spring Quarter 2004 Good Project Management Creating a working flow chart designed to represent different phases of your project Creating a working spreadsheet of tasks, responsible parties, and a timeline for completing tasks Implementing your work schedule to complete your finished project in a timely manner

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 8Spring Quarter 2004 Purpose of the Design Schedule Things that have to be done –List the tasks in any order –Estimate time required –Establish the task order –Assign the people (Primary & Backup) Tools Available –MS Excel –MS Project

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 9Spring Quarter 2004 Work Breakdown Structures Work breakdown structures are useful in determining the order in which tasks must be completed These structures outline what needs to be completed before another task can begin The structure serves as a visual interpretation of your schedule

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 10Spring Quarter 2004 Work Breakdown Structures Task 1 Task 1b Task 1a Final Project Task 2 Task 3 Task 2b Task 2a

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 11Spring Quarter 2004 Managing Your Project Each team is required to create a spreadsheet or other document incorporating the following things: –Task # (tasks in order) & Task description –Primary person, Secondary or back-up person –Estimated start date, Estimated end date –Due date or deadline –Actual start date, Actual end date –Estimated amount of time to complete task –Actual amount of time to complete task

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 12Spring Quarter 2004 Tasks Examine the syllabus Brainstorm in your group to decide what possible tasks for the group will be After you have decided these tasks, break them down into smaller parts where possible Put these tasks in order from start to finish for the project

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 13Spring Quarter 2004 Hints for Ordering Tasks Look at the syllabus and “Team Design Project Description” to see what your weekly assignments will be These assignments will help to develop a timeline for your group Work backwards from turning in the written report, giving the oral report through these assignment due dates

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 14Spring Quarter 2004 Hints for Ordering Tasks Start with what major assignment or task needs to be completed for each week of the quarter Then use your list of smaller tasks to fill in what needs to be done each day Decide which tasks must be completed before another phase of your project is started and allow for that time – use your work breakdown structure

Engineering H193A - Team Project Gateway Engineering Education Coalition P. 20Spring Quarter 2004 Assignment Create a spreadsheet document or MS Project schedule of all tasks to be completed within the project Create a visual interpretation of that schedule using a work breakdown structure - Make a sketch by hand, or use a word processor's drawing capabilities
