Agriculture
5
How many of you have ever visited another country? How would you rate the quality of life there? How many of you left being more appreciative of your own country? Jamaica……..
6
How many of you have a relative or friend working in Agriculture? Do you think that effects how much you appreciate agriculture and all it does for society? I feel it is important that everyone respects the agricultural cluster and its workers. You do not have to aspire to have a career in agriculture, but having knowledge of its benefits is necessary.
7
Agriculture gives us the good life!!!!!!!!!! How? The variety of food we eat. The clothes we wear. The homes we live in. We also meet the needs of millions of people in other countries.
8
Agriculture makes us a Strong Nation…………. How? We have an abundance of high quality foods for reasonable prices. Approximately 11% of America’s total income is spent on food. What does that mean? We can spend our money on other things which leads to a better quality of life.
9
International Trade This is buying and selling goods by two or more nations Exports are sold to other countries: Examples: rice, wheat, poultry, and cotton. This is very important because it provides jobs for Americans. About 16 out of every 100 people in the U.S. work in Agriculture.
10
Imports are products bought from other nations. Importing goods allows us to have products that are in short supply in the United States Example: COFFEE
11
Nutrition Foods in all 5 food groups are grown in the United States. We have nutritional facts placed on almost everything. Why is this so important? Food Safety laws prevent us from eating contaminated foods.
12
Agriculture Prevents……. Poverty-this exists when people do not have enough money to buy food, clothing, and housing. Or they do not have enough food or supplies in their country.
13
What usually causes Poverty? Societal Problems No jobs No production Bad government Thanks to Agriculture and Natural Resources we have jobs and products we need and can afford.
14
Natural Resources Give us fertile soil, clean water, and clean air. If we did not have people working in this area we might not have clean air and water. Forestry What would life be like without our homes, and our favorite trees. Trees can protect us and provide many items we use every day. Ex. Fuel Forests also protect our wildlife.
15
Agriculture gives us a good environment…. Horticulture is the field of study that deals with the skill and art of growing and using plants for their beauty. Examples would be flowers for florists Landscapers beautify our neighborhoods and schools.
16
The point of this lesson is to make you realize how agriculture affects everyone in society today. Farming is not the only career in Agriculture, many other jobs exist. This is an area that will continue to grow and has many career opportunities.
17
Review……. What is quality of life and How does the United States differ from other countries? What does agriculture provide for us? What is International trade and how does that effect us? What are some main reasons for poverty in other countries and how does agriculture help us to avoid mass poverty? Give me some examples of what agriculture does for your family?
