1. ATHENA Everything you need to know …and a few things you don’t
but we’ll tell you anyway.

I’m Molly Ruggles, and this is my colleague Peter Hess. Among other things, we support SMA faculty at MIT with using DE classrooms and technology. We also administer the Stellar course websites and once a year we orient SMA students to using the computer resources available at MIT.
This morning, we’re going to provide you with basic information about Athena and computing resources. If you have a question, feel free to ask at any time by raising your hand.
On Thursday of this week, two days from now, we are also offering a more in-depth Athena session. This second session is optional. At the end of today’s session, we’ll ask for a show of hands of those who are interested in attending the more in-depth session. The in-depth session will not conflict with any other SMA activities or events.
In case you are wondering, there WILL be a quiz at the end of this presentation. It will have absolutely no bearing on or connection to your official transcript, BUT from the pile of correct submissions we will choose 2 winners who’ll receive an MIT T-shirt. So listen carefully, in order to win. We’ll announce the winners later today or in an .

2. Who is Athena? Greek Mythology Goddess of Wisdom Intellect Invention

(Zeus swallowed Meti, in hopes of preventing Athena’s birth, but Athena sprang, fully armored from the head of Zeus, and Meti was never seen again. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Minerva, though they’re not quite the same.)
How many of you are familiar with Greek Mythology or know who is the goddess Athena?
If so, who knows what Athena is always depicted wearing? Armor.
Early in history, she was also seen as goddess of war, and moral and intellectual superiority. Over time she evolved more into the more peaceful profile that she is known for. However, she is always depicted wearing armor.
The city Athens Greece was named for her.
The word Athenaeum, takes its root from the Goddess Athena. And at NTU there is the student Athenaeum, I believe. So Athena’s attributes are pursued on both sides of the globe.
Who is Athena is the wrong question actually. What is Athena is the question to ask.

3. MIT Athena Athena was developed here in the early ‘80’s
A campus-wide, networked computer system serving MIT’s academic community
Comprised of 100s of computers connected to MITNet
Available to you at workstations in Athena “clusters”

4. What Athena is..
A set of computing tools built originally to work with Unix, now also comes in a Linux flavor
A layer on top of the operating system
A environment consisting of clients (workstations) and servers:
File servers
Print Servers
Post Office Servers

5. Some characteristics of Athena
Distributed file system – your files are not stored on the computer where you work
Secure and robust
Well suited to scientific and engineering applications
Configurations and preferences are stored on the network and follow you around

6. MIT email – don’t go there
Every Athena user account comes with an MIT account. You will get one.
PLEASE DO NOT USE IT.
We do not provide support, or training for MIT .
You will lose this account after you leave MIT.

7. WHERE are Athena clusters?
Locations throughout campus
Select > Other Options > Map/Status of Athena

At the welcome screen of any Athena Workstation, press > Other Options >Map/ Status of Athena Clusters to access this map.
You’ll also find Athena Quick stations along the infinite corridor.
You’ll find lone workstations in alcoves scattered throughout the Institute.

8. Recommended Athena Clusters:
Not all Workstations are Created Equal.
IBM and Dell PCs most familiar.
Sun Spark and Sun Ultra workstations have different keyboards and different control processes. S/W discussed in this presentation works fine on them.

HAVE AN NUS/NTU STUDENT LOGON TO ATHENA and CREATE USERNAME AND PWD.
Choose something lasting (if you ever come back to MIT, you’ll have this username. And it will also be your address.)
username of 3-8 characters – must be lowercase letters or numbers
password of at least 6 characters long. Can be any combination of chars or letters on the computer keyboard. Pick something that's easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess. If you password is not secure enough, the system will prompt you to reselect.
Rules of Use: Don’t use Athena for financial gain; don’t eat, drink, or smoke in the clusters; don’t reconfigure the sw/ or hw on the machines; don’t share your u/p with anyone; don’t power off your Athena machine; don’t leave your Athena machine unattended for more than 20 minutes; don’t be noisy; don’t be a printer hog; don’t try to access someone else’s files; don’t try to intercept or monitor network traffic not intended for you. Do a search for “Rules of Use” on the MIT homepage.
Wait 24 hours before access to Athena.

IV. LOGON to ATHENA - TOMORROW

1.) Log on.
A.) You’ll see the Console Window and the Terminal Window. The Console window displays workstation activity. The Terminal Window is where you access the athena prompt, if you wish.
B.) Click on WWW to launch Mozilla (look and feel of Netscape) This’ll get you to your NTU/NUS webmail. Please do check your NTU/NUS regularly, as this is venue through which official notices and announcements will be sent.
2.) You all have 1 GB personal storage space on Athena. Its referred to as your Athena Locker. At Athena prompt: quota -v
3.) Literally 100s apps on Athena. Click on Menu to
A.) Launch Star Office – like many Athena applications, its slow to launch.
B.) Create a document. Save it to your Athena Public Folde as HTML filer.
4.) View public folder from a browser web.mit.edu/ruggles/Public
5.) MToolsFM transfer files to and from your personal storage space to external media.
In your locker you will see your Public Folder, Private Folder, Personal Webspace (WWW)
You’ll also see other folders – you can ignore them.
Your entire Athena Locker is accessible from any Athena Workstation on campus.
Your Public Folder is viewable from any computer anywhere with a browser.
MToolsFM works for floppy disks and zip disks. (Thumb drives probably don’t work; no exposed USB ports.)
6.) Printing in the clusters.
All machines in clusters have default printers. The printers in the clusters are labeled with their names, using Mythology theme (helios, plato, pandora, etc.) To determine which printer is the default printer for your workstation type lpq at the Athena prompt

7.) Logoff. Don’t ever close the Terminal Window, or you won’t be able to logoff.
Logoff button just above the exit sign.
If you want to lock the workstation. Menu > Lock Workstation.
8.) Not all Multimedia works on Athena. You may run into problems loading web pages with shockwave. And pages that need Windows Media Player may not work. Real Player and Quick Time should both work fine, however.

MIT library system one of the most extensive in the world.
Register your MIT ID card when using library for first time.
Go to any circulation desk.
Tell them you’re with SMA.
