2 Early History of Pentecostalism ● Acts 2:1-4 - Pentecost – Glossolalia ● Evidence of “Baptism in the Holy Spirit” – “Second Blessing” ● Definitive and concrete sign of salvation – Also evidence of this occurring in 1800s ● Charles Parham – 1901, Bethel Bible College in Kansas ● Azusa Street Revival – 1906 – William Seymour – Thousands sought Baptism in the Spirit (as evidenced by tongues)

3 Acts 2:1-4 ● 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. ● 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. ● 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. ● 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 4 History – 1906 till present ● 1914 – Assemblies of God Formed – “Finished Work” Theory – vs. “Third Blessing” ● Oral Roberts – Healing Evangelist of the 50s ● Full Gospel Business Men ● Current Status

5 Other Significant Practices ● Baptism – Believer’s Baptism – Immersion ● Communion – Symbolic meal ● Worship (In addition to tongues) – Prophesying, healings, exorcisms, hand-clapping, shouting, “slain in the Spirit” – Free worship, often involves an altar call, music, and sermon

6 Rituals ● Communion – 4 or 5 times a year – Focus on fellowship ● Marriage – Takes one of 3 forms ● Funeral – Looked at as a celebration of a person’s life, rather than in mourning

7 Rituals (cont.) ● Sins should be confessed, often encouraged to meet with the Pastor – Pastor will pray a Prayer of Restoration with them ● For the sick – Anointing with oil occurs – Also praying over for healing ● Ordination – Takes place Friday evening of the Council for the larger District of Congregations (CATC a part of PAW – Pentecostal Assemblies of the World)

10 Pentecostalism in Minnesota ● Some of the early events preceding Parham’s glossalalia and Azusa had origins in parts of Minnesota ● Formally, Pentecostal Movements came to Minnesota immediately following Azusa (1907)

11 History of Christ Apostolic Temple Church ● Founded Sept. 17, 1935 ● New assembly begun to combat bigotry from three other congregations – Thirteen people (referred to as “saints”) undertook this mission ● Chose to be a part of P.A.W ● Elder Alfred Lawrence as the first pastor ● August 1997, moved into the current church home
