2 What modern language courses are offered ?  We offer classes in:  The proficiency levels of our courses are:  Elementary-level courses (101 & 102 level)  Intermediate-level courses (103 & 104 level)  Near-native level language courses (105 & 106 level)  Courses in Italian and Portuguese for native speakers of Spanish (107 level)  Intensive elementary courses (110 level)  Literature courses for native speakers (200 level) 2 ArabicAmerican Sign Language BengaliMandarin Chinese HebrewGreek ItalianJapanese FrenchKorean PortuguesePolish RussianSpanish

3 Three reasons you want to take ML classes  Take advantage of your bilingual skills  Meet the language requirements at 4-year colleges  Take advantage of cultural diversity at LaGuardia 3

4 Exploit your bilingual skills  You may earn up to 9 credits by taking one three-credit advanced-level language or literature course 1. take the placement exam to prove your proficiency in the language 2. register for an advanced-level language or literature course 3. you will receive regular credits for the class that you registered for (usually 3 credits). In addition, you will receive 3 to 6 exemption credits that you can use as Liberal Arts or unrestricted elective credits  Note  In some majors (e.g., Bilingual Education, Business Management, International Management, and International Business option), you are not allowed to use exemption credits toward graduation. You can still transfer exemption credits to a 4-year college. 4

5 Language requirements at 4-year college  Many majors at 4-year colleges have a modern language requirement  It takes about two years to fulfill language requirements at the senior college  Start early at LaGuardia! 5 Hunterfour semesters or a course above the intermediate level CCNYfour semesters or a course above the intermediate level Queensthree semesters or a course above the intermediate level Baruchsix credits in modern/foreign language Yorkeight credits in modern/foreign language

6 Cultural diversity at LaGuardia  At LaGuardia, you can easily find native speakers of a language that you are learning  Our students come from 150 different countries and speak more than 80 languages.  All language tutors are native or near-native speakers of language.  You might not be able to enjoy the same privileges at another school or at a 4-year college 6
