Nasty stuff ANTIBACTERIALS –Found in cleansers, deodorants and other cosmetic products, –Triclosan encourage the rise of drug-resistant bacteria, COAL-TAR COLORS –FD&C Blue 1 and FD &C Green 3 are carcinogenic, –D&C Red 33, FD&C Yellow 5 and FD&C Yellow 6 -- have been shown to cause cancer when applied to the skin. DIETHANOLAMINE (DEA) –Widely used in shampoos –Suspected carcinogen TOLUENE –This solvent found in nail products can cause liver damage and is irritating to the skin and respiratory tract.

…more nasty stuff FORMALDEHYDE –Found in eye shadows, mascaras and cosmetics –The EPA classifies it a probable human carcinogen. GLYCOL ETHERS –Found in nail polish, deodorant, perfumes and other cosmetics, –Some are hazardous to the reproductive system. Other effects of include anemia and irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat. –Avoid :EGPE, EGME,EGEE, DEGBE, PGME, DPGME and those with "methyl" in their names.

…even more nasty stuff HEAVY METALS: LEAD AND MERCURY –Lead is found in lead acetate in hair dyes and makeup. A brain- and nervous-system toxin as well as a known carcinogen –Mercury is a preservative in eye-area cosmetics A potent nervous-system toxin, PARABENS –Used in underarm deodorants, –Recently found in tissue samples from human breast tumors. PETROLATUM (vaseline, petroleum jelly) –Used in cold creams, lipsticks/protection, baby creams, eye shadow –Petrolatum can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

…and even more nasty stuff. PHENYLENEDIAMINE (PPD) –oxidation dyes, amino dyes para dyes, or peroxide dyes. –Found in many hairdyes, –PPD is linked with skin irritations, and respiratory disorders. Has been banned in Europe. PHTHALATES –Used in fragrances, deodorants, nail polishes, hair products and lotions, –Produce cancer of the liver and birth defects in lab animals. –Choose products labeled "fragrance-free" or are scented with pure botanical or essential oils. SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS) –Found in toothpaste, shampoo and other cleansers –Caused "severe epidermal changes" to mouse skin.

Safer household cleaning with: 50/50 solution of vinegar and water –Disinfects, removes stains, deodorizes Baking Soda –Removes stains, neutralizes odors Liquid castile soap –General cleaning Lemon juice –Cuts grease Non-Chlorine scouring powder –e.g. Bon Ami ®

Safer All-Purpose Cleaner Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and shake –½ teaspoon liquid castile soap made from natural plant oils –2 teaspoons borax or baking soda –1 teaspoon vinegar or lemon juice –2 cups hot water For a disinfectant add essential oils- –lavender, tea tree, rosemary, orange blossom or eucalyptus For heavy cleaning add ½ teaspoon washing soda
