The Task Students will demonstrate an understanding of empathic listening, as seen through their use of positive non-verbal language, minimal encouragers, reflection of emotion, and summary of main themes.

Adapting the Task Linguistic -- write a script about two characters communicating well; include appropriate words and stage directions Interpersonal -- videotape an interview with someone you know who is struggling with a minor issue; use the empathic listening model Intrapersonal -- write a series of journal entries about how you felt when you did or did not apply empathic listening skills in your placement Musical -- create and sing a song that explains the steps people need to take if they want to communicate effectively

Adapting the Task (cont’d) Logical -- research the effects of poor communication skills on people’s health; then, in a debate format, argue in favour of proper training in empathic listening Visual / Spatial -- create an overhead, PowerPoint slide, bristol board display, or collage outlining the steps of empathic listening Naturalist -- watch nature shows for one week; record any reference to or observation about how other species communicate with each other; then compare these habits with those of humans using empathic listening Bodily / Kinesthetic -- create and perform a dance or pantomime of an appropriate interaction between two people; feel free to exaggerate appropriate physical responses and to use symbolic actions to communicate your ideas
