Who Was Involved? Haverah Park was operated by the Physics Department of the University of Leeds Goal Record extensive cosmic ray air showers

Time / Location Haverah Park was opened in the 1970s and operated for about 20 years Haverah Park was located in north Yorkshire Moors in the United Kingdom Situated on 12 square kilometers of farmland

How It Works Haverah Park operated using water Cerenkov detectors These detectors are filled with pure water, that generates small amounts of light known as Cerenkov radiation whenever a particle passes through These photons bounce around in the tank until they reach the photomultiplier tube

Detector Arrangement Haverah Park is made up of several detector stations a few kilometers apart from each other The detectors are enclosed in wooden shacks

Experiment Status Some interesting data was received by the array but the experiment closed in 1993 A party was held to mark the closure of the successful array. One of the water detectors was opened and the water was still good enough to drink!

Results Part One During its 20 year course, Haverah Park recorded thousands of cosmic ray showers Four showers were recorded that came from particles of an energy greater than 10 20 ev, the energy of a tennis ball going 180 mph, which was unheard of at the time These findings were under scrutiny for some time

Results Part Two In 1993 an experiment in Utah known as “The Fly’s Eye” detected a particle of energy 3x10 20, the same amount of energy you would feel if you dropped a bowling ball on your foot from one meter off the ground Haverah Park’s controversial findings were finally confirmed

Results Part Three After the existence of such high energy particles was made known, plans were made for a larger project Since showers of this magnitude only hit every square kilometer once per century, the Pierre Auger Observatory project was born The project, spanning thousands of square kilometers, was designed to specifically monitor these high-energy cosmic rays Pierre Auger Pierre Auger Water Cerenkov Detector

Objectives Tell who was involved in the project and why Tell where and when the project took place Give the current status of the project Explain the results and aftereffects of the project Explain how the project worked and how it was arranged

The End
