3 The Cartoon - Not So Funny n In reality, the attitude depicted in the cartoon is often typical. n The traditional system for project delivery is filled with disincentives for collaboration – Retainage, penalty clauses, low bid

4 Current Project Delivery System n Common Themes – Separate silos of responsibility n Owners n Designers n Builders – Arms length between Owner and Designer/Builder – Opposite incentives - shift risk to the other parties – Disputes - Winner(s)/Loser(s)

5 Call to Arms n There is agreement among all parties, (owners, designers, and builders) that things aren’t working. n Owners are probably the leading driving force for alternative delivery methods. n A call for more collaboration & cooperation among the parties.

6 Trends Toward Collaboration n Design-Build (from 35% now to over 50%) n In 1997 a diverse group of owners, designers, and builders got together in San Francisco to discuss this very topic. n Discussed openly the experiences and expectations of each group n What they found – Common experiences – Common expectations

7 Common themes for Owner’s, Designer’s, Builder’s Experiences r Trust is low, suspicion high r High risk of financial loss - all parties r Blame the other party(s) for the problem r Communication - difficult to get on the same page r Relationships are adversarial r Decision processes are unclear - shaky

8 Common themes for Owner’s, Designer’s, Builder’s Expectations r Superior/Extraordinary project results r Financial success r Projects to be proud of r Open book for/to all parties-common systems r Efficient work processes/eliminate the redundancies r Willing to be accountable - share the risk r Repeat business - want to work together again r Advocates not adversaries

13 Our Best Hope - Education n We can best influence collaboration in the workforce by modeling collaboration for our students. n Interdisciplinary industry panels are an excellent way to model interdisciplinary collaboration n Our guests tonight are an example of such collaboration
