The Introductory Paragraph: Two part: 1. a few general statements about your subject; 2. Thesis statement: names the specific topic and the controlling ideas or major divisions of the topic. Specifics on thesis statement: A. states the main topic; B. lists subdivisions; C. indicates organizations (logical order); D. usually the last sentence.

Thesis Statement: Examples and Punctuation When there are more than one subtopics– 1. use a colon (:). Ex. Prejudice arises from three basic causes: childhood conditioning, ignorance, and fear. 2. Use correlative conjunctions (both… and; not only… but also; neither… nor, etc.) Ex. Young people in my culture have less freedom than young people in the United States not only in their choice of life-style but also in their choice of careers.
