41
©2006, CSA Search Methods – And / Or / Not You can use these special words to connect your search terms for specific results: AND – returns opportunities containing all of the parameters you set e.g., searching for WIND AND ENERGY will find profiles containing the word WIND and the word ENERGY somewhere in the field(s) you are searching. OR – returns opportunities containing any of the parameters you set e.g. searching for WIND OR ENERGY will find all records that contain the word WIND or the word ENERGY, or both. NOT – lets you exclude parameters e.g., searching for WIND NOT ENERGY will find records that contain the word WIND but do not contain the word ENERGY.
42
©2006, CSA Search Language – other tricks You can use these special characters to connect your search terms for specific results: Wild Card * – find variations on a word e.g., ENVIROMENT* finds profiles with words such as ENVIRONMENTAL and ENVIRONMENTS. Proximity w/# – find words used together but not necessarily in an exact phrase e.g., WIND w/2 ENERGY finds profiles where these two words are separated by not more than two words, such as those with the phrase WIND TURBINE ENERGY.
43
©2006, CSA Search Language – more tricks You can use these special characters to connect your search terms for specific results: Exact Phrase “ ” – find a precise phrase. e.g., WIND ENERGY in quotation marks finds profiles where these two words appear together as a phrase. Precedence ( ) – execute a series of search commands in a particular order. e.g., (HIV OR AIDS) NOT EDUCATION finds profiles with the terms HIV and/or AIDS, then excludes those with the word EDUCATION. Tip: See http://expertise.cos.com/quickguide.shtml for full information about searching. This help documentation is available via the ‘instructions’ link from every COS Expertise page.
