Recording Industry Files Suit Against Individual Students Think twice about installing any peer-to- peer file sharing applications such as Kazaa. If you do install it, make sure the server function is disabled and do not use it to download material in violation of copyright guidelines.

If you need assistance in removing file sharing software from your computer, you will need to contact a local computer store to remove all file sharing software--there is a fee for this service. See the ITS web page for more information. http://www.colby.edu/info.tech/policies/html/ april_copyright.html

Wireless In Miller Library Wireless network resources are available in Miller Library Information on how to configure your computer to use the Miller Library wireless network can be found at http://www.colby.edu/info.tech/wireless

If you set up a wireless device in your dorm room **All DHCP and NAT functionality must be disabled. WEP should be enabled at the strongest level. Always use a unique SSID and disable SSID broadcasting where possible to increase privacy.** You must register wireless devices with ITS/SCS - scshelp@colby.edu scshelp@colby.edu Send your name, MacAddress, dorm/room number, and type of device.

KEYSERVED SOFTWARE Share Colby owned applications legally through the GeneralServer / Software Library: Instructions and software list at: http://www.colby.edu/its/software/keyserver.html

The Threat of Viruses All computers get viruses Protect your computer Use Sophos - supplied by the college Update your virus definitions each week or more. You can never update too often. Don’t open suspicious file attachments. (eg. files with.exe,.pif,.com,.scr extensions.) BACKUP! BACKUP !BACKUP!

NOTE Only one virus software package per computer - otherwise you will experience “conflict” problems. On Windows computers remove unnecessary software by going to the control panel and selecting add/remove programs.

Backup your Documents Always backup important files. Leave a copy of the files on your computer and back up to a zip disk or CD. You never know when your hard drive might crash, leaving you with problems with a very important paper.

Protecting your Windows Computer! XP Users turn your firewall on. Others can download a free firewall called Zone Alarm www.colby.edu/its/students. www.colby.edu/its/students Windows updates need to be done at least BIWEEKLY.- otherwise you will be vulnerable for network viruses which slow down the network and cause major problems to your computer. Set “updates” to be done automatically. Keep Sophos definitions up to date - otherwise you could have major computer problems as well. Set a password on your computer - lock your computer or turn your computer off when not in use.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Students need to contact their vendor to determine if they should install service pack 2 (SP2) or not. Students who are going to install SP2 should backup their data before installation. SCS staff will not install SP2 for students.

Technological Ethics: Colby enforces the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Copying or sharing software is illegal without licenses such as the (Microsoft Campus License Agreement). --Please abide by all copyright statements. --Downloading large files decreases performance of the network for everyone. --MP3s are illegal if you don’t own the music.
