Project Characterization Virtual Traffic Signal Presented by: Ron Herman Ofir Shentzer Technion – Israel Institute Of Technology Electrical Engineering Department Instructor: Mr. Moni Orbach

Project’s Goals Define and implement a warning system for a vehicle driver, that will play as a real time warning signal. Design and Construct a traffic signal data base, which would hold relevant information. Develop an algorithm for data updating, while acting under system constraints.

System Inputs The System relies on input from two different sources: 1. GPS (Global Positioning System), which is installed within a 3G cellular Phone. 2. Remote data base, which will be connected as means of updating local system data base.

System Input : 1. GPS The GPS provides three main variables: a. Direction. b. Location. c. Velocity.

System Input : 2. Remote DB The remote data base is accessed via cellular communication. The data base holds a complete set of traffic signals, special events and their locations. The desired information is send to the local machine on demand. (according to pre- designed algorithm)

System Output The system invokes two types of alarms: a. Warning signal according to predetermined use-cases. b. Traffic condition reports relevant to current location.

System Block Diagram Controller User Interface User Interface Processing Unit Processing Unit Local Data Base Local Data Base Remote Data Base GPS & GSM Card Interface

Database’s Implementation Remote DB will be implemented using Microsoft SQL-Server technology, for better performance and modularity. As a start, for testing use, the remote DB will be stored on one of the laboratory’s servers, and will be accessed via lab network comunication (modeling celluar network).

Example Use case Approaching a Stop sign : As the car enters the sign’s defined access space (defined in the DB). It’s (the car’s) speed is checked (speed taken from GPS card data). If the car exceeds the pre-defined speed limitation (shown in a graph on the next slide and implemented in the system’s processing module) a warning signal is passed to the driver. A sample check is taken every pre-defined fixed time interval.

Example Use case (cont.) Forbidden Area

Time Schedule (cont.) Week 1 (till Thursday 6/5/2004) - define database’s internal formation - learning database’s implementation method - define (along with parallel group) GSM card interface

Time Schedule (cont.) Week 2 (till Thursday 13/5/2004) - start of database implementation - start design of GPS card simulator

Time Schedule (cont.) Week 3-4 (till Thursday 27/5/2004) - continue work on database implementation - finish design and implementation of GPS card simulator

Current Semester’s Goals Implementing GPS card simulator. Completing work on remote DB. Gathering ideas for Local DB storing and processing algorithms.
