1 Prof Stephen Thurgate 1 Review of the Academic Year …the quality of teaching, the student experience and occupational health and safety are being compromised due to the continuing shortage of classroom space resulting from increasing enrolments. A shortfall of suitable space for examinations is also an ongoing issue of concern… Report of the Academic Program Committee to Academic Senate, 30 th Mar 2010, Item 10.1, p.18.

2 Prof Stephen Thurgate 2 Principles of the Review Focus on student learning outcomes Improve the student experience Increase flexibility and student choice Align with Macquarie’s strategic directions & enhance Macquarie’s image Comply with the Workload Formula (under negotiation through EBA) Be cognisant of the implications on professional & technical staff and operational processes Streamline administration Effective provision and use of physical and virtual L&T spaces Alignment with other significant calendars

4 Prof Stephen Thurgate 4 Optimisation of the current 2 semesters Increase usage of online delivery Increase usage of flexible delivery e.g. block mode, breakfast, evening, weekends, external Increase the flexibility of timetabling system Increase integration with MQC

5 Prof Stephen Thurgate 5 Fully develop Summer School Commence Summer School teaching in December All high demand 100 level units and all People and Planet units to be also available in Summer School All International students to commence in Summer School prior to mainstreaming with domestic students – opportunity for orientation and academic literacy training Transfer some CSP places to Summer School Introduce ‘teaching only’ staff for Summer School Reduction in the time to confirm final grades

6 Prof Stephen Thurgate 6 Introduce a Third Semester All high demand 100 level units and all People and Planet units to be also available in Third Semester Opportunity for students to accelerate or reduce their load each semester while maintaining progress rate Staff to teach 2 out of 3 semesters Removal of pre-requisites, stu-vac & supplementary exams Reduction in the time to confirm final grades
