ISO 19115 – Metadata Next Generation International consensus being built on structured metadata within a broader Geomatics Standard under ISO Technical Committee 211 (TC 211) ISO 19155 reflects FGDC, TC 287, ANZLIC and other inputs also specifies content guidance (field vocabulary and structures), like FGDC

ISO 19115 Full Metadata Includes catalog elements and structures Provides conditional detail in excess of FGDC metadata, including special coverage of raster and imagery information Largely conditional and optional elements and structures Will look familiar to FGDC users

ISO 19115 Core Profile Intended primarily for use in describing spatial data sets for discovery Includes approximately 50 fields Covers the “who”, “what”, “when”, “where”, “why”, and “how” topics better than FGDC mandatory fields May not be adequate for detailed description requirements

FGDC and ISO Level of detail of FGDC and ISO metadata are similar FGDC mandatory fields and ISO Core metadata are quite similar, although ISO encourages more detail FGDC is contracting for construction of a tool to migrate from FGDC v2 to ISO ISO 19115 will be known as FGDC v3

Metadata Trends Coupling metadata with data archive, transfer and storage systems Desire to use database and web technologies to publish metadata Interest in documenting relevant non- digital assets for discovery and delivery (e.g. projects, services, expertise)
