3 3 Breakthroughs and Major Achievements Wireless Ad Hoc Networks TechnologyState-of-the-ArtBreakthrough *New MAC protocols for power saving in a single hop MANET A power control protocol which does not degrade throughput and yields energy saving. (Eun-Sun Jung, Texas A&M Univ. and Nitin H. Vaidya, UIUC ) A quorum-based sleep/wake-up mechanism is developed to conserve energy by allowing the host to sleep for more than one beacon interval, if few transmissions are involved.

4 4 Breakthroughs and Major Achievements Wireless Sensor Networks TechnologyState-of-the-ArtBreakthrough A user location detection system for identifying the consumer’s location. A range-free localization algorithm is proposed in an irregular radio pattern. (T. He, C. Huang, B. M. Blum, J. A. Stankovic, T. Abdelzaher, Univ. of Virginia) Our system is the first work that integrates WLAN, wireless sensor network, and RFID system. In the shopping center, the consumer will receive the real-time information including his/her current location, the most popular products around the consumer, as well as the detailed product information.

5 5 Breakthroughs and Major Achievements Wireless Sensor Networks TechnologyState-of-the-ArtBreakthrough Obstacle-free robot deployment and data dissemination algorithms The robot explores the environment and deploys a stationary sensor on the target location from time to time. (M. A. Batalin and G. S. Sukhatme, University of Southern California) A distributed algorithm is proposed for constructing a shadow region for the concave obstacle.(L. Zou, M. Lu, and Z. Xiong, Texas A&M University) Our approach is the first work that resists obstacle and guarantees full coverage by deploying near- optimal number of sensor nodes. The developed data dissemination algorithm significantly reduces the control overhead. The developed data dissemination algorithm is the first work that takes into consideration the multiple obstacles.
