I'm not saying FB and MS are god's gifts, but their popularity is not caused by anti-social people, but by people who are highly social and are living in a society with all sorts of restrictions. Maybe if we didn't work 80 hour weeks... maybe if we didn't switch jobs every 18 months... maybe if we had more than 2 weeks vacation a year... maybe if we all worked 9-5... maybe if we let our teens run around outside with their friends... “In a sense, Facebook has grown beyond social networking into a new kind of portal, giving users broad control over what they see and how they see it. The application is still fundamentally about relationships and the always-changing networks among individuals, but these relationships are increasingly based on professional interests, political activities, and other connections that are not strictly social.” 7 things you should know about... “Classroom and lecture-based experiences are an important part of higher education, but so are the relationships students cultivate with one another and with faculty. Facebook’s structure encourages users to view relationships in a broad context of learning, even as affiliations change […] Facebook has become a model for how communities—of learners, of workers, of any group with a common interest— can come together, define standards for interaction, and collaboratively create an environment that suits the needs of the members.” 7 things you should know about... Question for "bosses": Here's the scenario: You are interviewing two equally qualified job candidates with equally strong references and recommendations. You met Candidate A on a Facebook group while you've never encountered Candidate B before, online or offline. Are you more likely to hire Candidate A? Does it make no difference? Or are other factors more important in your decision? Be honest. Rebecca MacKinnon http://rconversation.blogs.com/rconversation/2007/07/finally-joined-.html

“Victor Sanchez, 54, a senior development director, was once invited to join a site and was surprised to see a photograph of a younger colleague's seahorse tattoo. ‘Sometimes it's good to learn things about a colleague much later -- or never at all,’ he says.” “ OMG -- My Boss Wants to 'Friend' Me On My Online Profile,” Wall Street Journal, Jared Sandberg http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB118401324654861242.html

Historically, a “social network is a social structure made of nodes (which are generally individuals or organizations) that are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as values, visions, idea, financial exchange, friends, kinship, dislike, conflict, trade, web links, sexual relations, disease transmission (epidemiology), or airline routes. The resulting structures are often very complex.” — Wikipedia, “Social Network”

From Cornell University, Policy Office, “Thoughts on Facebook” THOUGHT: Think about not only your marketability today as a cool guy or girl in your college social circle, but who you might want to be in five or ten years when posting an "identity" on the Internet. Remember, just because it is a new technology does not absolve you of the responsibility to use it in legal and appropriate ways — including taking into account your obligations regarding proper conduct as a citizen of the university.

“Granovetter's most famous work is ‘The Strength of Weak Ties’. It is considered one of the most influential sociology papers ever written. In marketing or politics, the weak ties enable reaching populations and audiences that are not accessible via strong ties.” – Wikipedia, “Mark Granovetter”

One response to a friend invitation I sent: “No, thanks! You ARE my friend, but I don't want to be in anyone's facebook! … I registered with no information so I could check on candidates for jobs here.” This friend relented and has begun accepting requests for Facebook friendships.
