2 2 The collective spaces Muslims have built in Detroit are products of careful thought and negotiation. There are over 50 mosques in greater Detroit, and their growth is transforming neighborhoods, business districts, and relations among Muslims and between Muslims and the larger society. This project examines how Muslim communities and their institutions have evolved in Detroit over the last century, focusing on processes of building, inhabiting, and display. We will explore these issues through community-based, collaborative research, which will include: Ethnographic and historical research Documentation: website Exhibition;: media union gallery, April 6 Links with other projects now being planned Project Description

3 3 The exhibition in the Duderstadt Gallery: this part consists of 1) pictures, explanatory texts panels and artifacts 2) video installations and projections 3)computer models and virtual reality Website: pictures, mosque case studies, architectural models, semantic navigation semantic navigation through the studied mosques: this is multidimensional presenting information and insight into the design of the mosque, their construction, their typological differences and their representation of their respective communities Project components

The pews have been removed, and the sanctuary is now an open prayer space. Imam Mardini preaches from what was once the rear of the church; the elevated "front" of the sanctuary, once site of the pulpit and communion table, is now a space reserved for women. An area for washing before prayers has been installed downstairs, where a social hall and classrooms are also being built. The renovation and adornment of the AMC have produced a beautiful interior that reflects, in its design, a heightened awareness of the mosque's location in America.
