Academic Planning and Budget Building Meeting 3

* The current model we use must change to meet current as well as new and emerging client and community needs, align with the direction of professional literature and organizations, respond to the changing professional expectations, and balance with available resources. Change efforts identified must result in a more effective and efficient model.

Faculty and staff dialogues identified major change efforts in “what” and “how” we achieve a more effective and efficient model.

What we do…. * Common Foundations * Core How we do it….. * Interdisciplinary Focus * Clinically-Based Programs * College Structure

* Develop Common COE Foundations Establish a set of common foundational competencies for ALL COE graduates. What is distinctive about SDSU COE graduates? What sets our graduates apart from other programs?

Graduates are proficient in: * Their expertise in interdisciplinary practice * Their cultural competence in serving and engaging diverse communities/clients * Their ability to engage in change through understanding systems * Their use of information/data to inform decisions

* Embedded throughout all program curriculum and clinical placements * Are “foundational” to all aspects of student, staff, and faculty work * Are monitored and assessed to ensure the quality of the COE “brand” * Are College-wide and across all programs

* CORE addresses essential knowledge within and across disciplines and programs * CORE identifies what is at the center and central to professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions * CORE is taught and learned “deep” * CORE is the anchor * CORE is what doesn’t get cut or treated superficially * CORE is what matters most * CORE requires making choices and assigning greater importance and impact

* Learning theory * Human development * Ethics * History * Multi-Cultural Education

* Interdisciplinary Focus * Clinically-Based Programs

* Programs within the COE will establish an interdisciplinary focus. This focus will be embedded throughout the scope and sequence of our programs.

* Three strategies proposed to accomplish this focus will be to: a) Implement a problem based learning approach that uses interdisciplinary Case Studies b) Implement a Design Studio model with faculty across disciplines. c) Cluster clinical experiences in settings that cut across programs

Programs within the COE will establish and support clinically-based programs in which content and pedagogy are woven around clinical experiences throughout preparation in coursework, laboratory-based experiences, and in school, agency, organization, and community- embedded practice.

* The core experience of the program is clinical practice * Student learning and positive client outcomes is the focus * Clinical preparation is integrated throughout every fact of the program in a dynamic way * Programs prepare innovators, collaborators, and problem solvers

* Learning occurs in an interactive professional community * All supervisors, coaches, guides, etc. are rigorously selected and prepared * State of the art technologies promote enhanced productivity, greater efficiencies, and collaboration through learning communities

* A powerful R & D agenda and systematic gathering and use of data supports continuous improvement * Strategic Partnerships are imperative

The COE will implement a college structure that supports the new direction of the COE and is focused on the effectiveness of our graduates, best practices, and preparation program performance to support continuous improvement. (Includes improving procedures, support for faculty development, and admissions.)

* TE 930 (Rdg/LA) integrate SPED/TE * ED 690 * COE Advisory Board * Project Connect * Case Studies * Design Studio * Expand PACT and eSupervision * Interdisciplinary MA * Hobsons On-line applications * Qualtrics

* Ability to continue providing the programs we now offer * Ability to maintain high quality * Being in position to create our own destiny “Change or be changed” * Address systemic issues that have developed over time * Maintaining our place in “making a difference” through research, service and teaching.

* Morning: PTLC Groups * Afternoon: Framework for Action Groups
