Class Experiment Psych 231: Research Methods in Psychology

Memory Demonstration Instructions: I’m going to read a list of words. After I’m done, please count backwards by threes from the number that I give you. Then I’ll tell you to write down as many of the words as you can. Read list 683

Recall Please recall as many of the items now (write them down). Check : Nap Pillow Dream Doze Bed Blanket Snooze Snore Wake Drowsy

Reconstructive memory Our memories aren’t perfect We forget things We actively construct memories from bits and pieces More than that, we may actually make some things up sometimes (to fill in gaps) How many people thought “sleep” was on the list?

Reconstructive memory Applied situation Eye witness testimony What affects the memory of the event? What they saw How long ago What sort of cues do they get How they are asked about it?!

Class experiment Today going to go over the design and procedures for the class experiment. I have put the materials together and posted them on the web site Syllabus, class experiment, download from the green boxSyllabus,

Class experiment Your homework is to download these find some volunteers (2 people) collect some data Bring the data back to class on Monday I will compile and analyze the results Based on this experiment and these results you will produce an APA style research report

Class experiment In the packet you’ll find: Instructions Materials Response sheets Two consent forms Debriefing sheet

Class experiment Participants will be given a brief description of an automobile accident Later they will be asked to questions about the accident

Class experiment Some participants will see a “picture” of the accident, others will only read the description "I was standing on the Northwest corner of the intersection. Car 1 was approaching the intersection from the North at about 30 mph. Car 2 was approaching the intersection for the East at about 30 mph. Neither car slowed as they approached the intersection. Car 1 bumped Car 2 as it was going through the intersection. I think Car 1 may have been running a red light." contactedsmashed

Class experiment Some participants will see a “picture” of the accident, others will only read the description A - H run condition A I - R run condition B S - Z run condition C

Class experiment Following presentation ask your participant to: Please rate how much you think Car 1 is responsible (“at fault”) for the accident based on the eyewitness account you just read. How certain are you that your judgment in (1) above is correct? Please rate whether you think that there was broken glass at the accident scene How certain are you that your judgment in (3) above is correct?

The issues What are the issues that we’re looking at? What are your predictions? Intuitions Literature review: For your paper There are three required readings (see web page).web page You must include these in your introduction Find at least 1 additional article to include in your introduction

The design Rating for details (glass) What are our dependent variables? Accuracy of memory We have two Construct: Operational DV: Rating of fault Attribution of fault (or four) Confidence ratings

Conceptual IVs: Operational IVs: The design Factor A Factor B Word connotation Pictorial information Bumped Smashed Contacted Present/ Absent What is/are our independent variables?

Other questions Procedures? What do we need to control? Ethics? Consent form, debriefing I have created these and they are part of the experiment packet that you download

Exam 1 Overall good job! Mean 80.9%
