The Research Discovery Service Anne Bowtell, Medical Sciences Division Paul Groves, Academic Computing Development Team
2
What? A directory of summary information about researchers and research activities in the Medical Sciences Division. Available on the web. A project undertaken by the Academic Computing Development Team, joint bid by Medical Sciences Division and Research Technologies Service. Research Development Fund support for the next phase……

Work in Progress…..

Demo ….
5
Aims Provide an overview of research in the Division; Cut across department hierarchies; Provide an on-line business-card for every researcher.
6
Principles Self-service updating Information reuse Levels of privacy
7
What it’s not Google; Knowledge Management; Replacement for a department or unit website (though it is hoped they can reuse the information); PubMed; An institutional repository.
8
Why? for potential donors; for potential graduate students; subject-oriented rather than dept oriented. Information about MSD research on the web should be easy to find:

Structure
14
Underlying Technology System is written largely in an Object-Oriented way using PHP 5 Underlying database is MySQL 4.1 Templating Module (Savant 3) used to seperate the data from presentation means that the data output can be relatively easily be structured as HTML, RSS or SOAP (web services), allowing its reuse in different contexts (e.g. embedding a research group’s information in a department's web pages) Authentication to use WebAuth (i.e. Oxford Username)
15
Core Systems…. Core Systems
16
ICT Strategy How can the ICT Strategy support our project? 1. Technological 2. Procedural 3. Cultural
17
Technological: Directory Service Single source for contact information for every member of the University; Single source of “group/role” information for authorisation; Of sufficient granularity to be of use to departments & divisions; Appropriate mechanisms for update.
18
Procedural: Project Management Could we discuss…..? We need something to show to get buy-in. Is a linear, long-haul approach the best for this kind of project?
19
Cultural Promote a better understanding of complexities of IT projects and requirements; Find a better match between ambition and resources; Allow us to bid for what we need rather than for what we think we can get.
