High Speed Aircraft The only aircraft that grows more in length than the SR- 71 due to aerodynamic heating is the Concorde (aluminum structure, coefficient of thermal expansion is 22 x 10^-6), which at the end of it's Mach 2.0 heat cycle, is about 18 inches longer than when it took-off.

The A-36 steel bar is constrained to fit between two fixed supports when T 1 = 60ºF. If the temperature is raised to T 2 =120ºF determine the average thermal stress developed in the bar.

Lecture Example: The 40-ft long A-36 steel rails on a train tack are laid with a small gap to allow for thermal expansion. Determine the gap required so that the rails touch one another when the temperature is increased from -20°F to 90°F. What would the force on the rails be if the temperature were to rise to 110°F. The cross-sectional area of each rail is 5.1 in 2.

Determine the force exerted on the walls when temperature increases from 10 C to 20 C
