Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) Supports research in the atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences Advances scientific knowledge of Earth's environment, including resources such as water, energy, minerals, and biological diversity Principal source of federal funding for university-based fundamental research in the geosciences Addresses nation's need to understand, predict, and respond to environmental events and changes, and to use Earth's resources wisely Advances ability to predict natural phenomena of economic and human significance, such as climate changes, weather, earthquakes, fish-stock fluctuations, and disruptive events in the solar-terrestrial environment

He Sapa Oyate: Geoscience Community at the Heart of Everything That Is (OEDG Track 2) Goals: Establish a geosciences learning community for urban Native Americans using the Black Hills as a venue for blending traditional Lakota perspectives and knowledge with Western science. Increase awareness of the importance of the geosciences for managing natural resources and improving economic development in the local community. Partners: SDSMT; Rapid City area schools; local industry Program elements: Summer field camps for secondary students/teachers Experiential, inquiry-based learning activities that use both culturally significant sites & geological settings Earth, Fire, Water and Wind Lakota framework Integration of educational theory & modern laboratory equipment, including 3-D visualization techniques Development & evaluation of new educational resources for teachers Donna Kliche SD School of Mines & Technology Jacquelyn Bolman Humboldt State University GEO-0503616
