Flare, SEP, and spot occurrence patterns: RHESSI astrobiology? H. Hudson Space Sciences Lab, UC Berkeley Featuring figures from a recently submitted - but not refereed yet - short paper

2/7

3/7

4/7 Spot areas

5/7 From McCracken et al., JGR 106, 21,5885 (2001)

6/7 The Carrington flare of 1859 Also from McCracken et al. 200`

7/7 Conclusions Our RHESSI  -ray flares pointed to a gross asymmetry between the declining phases of the last two cycles This assymetry is visible in SEPs and spots as well The SEP fluence distribution is known to have a sharp cutoff. Does the flare hard X-ray (a.k.a. total energy) distribution do the same? - if not, could we slaughter microbes on a young planet by zapping it with killer flare radiations?
