Functions: what does doctrine do? Bring order to stories, myths, symbols of the tradition Explain how these images, stories, and symbols are ultimate and universal Explain beliefs in relation to current knowledge Therefore, it develops over time and in new situations Ex: Mahayana and Emptiness Stimulate a new world view Define the community

Interrelational Organically related To other “internal” doctrines” each scheme (set) is unique because its parts influence meaning of other parts Example: impermanence, interdependence, and no self To other dimensions of the religion Ritual, experience, story Mutually influential with other dimensions of religion Emerges from experience Helps guide experience
