Centralized Clinical Placements Processes and Practices Nursing Initiative Advisory Committee Update April 10, 2007

Overview BHE Nursing Education/Practice Partnership Survey Clinical Placements identified as significant issue in improving the quality of nursing education across the state. Time in arranging and managing clinical placements was seen as burdensome to facilities and schools of nursing. Statewide, there is an inadequate number of clinical sites in Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Behavioral/Mental Health. The competition for sites between schools of nursing was a major issue in every region of the state.

Initial CCP Database Launched CCP database and web site July 2006 Data from: –1 region – Northeast-Central 26 Hospitals/Hospital Systems 18 Nursing Programs Started with 668 clinical placements All were RN placements All placements were in hospitals

Expanding CCP Database Expanded Northeast-Central region to include: –LPN programs At colleges and technical/vocational schools –Rehabilitation and long-term care facilities –Boston-based nursing programs with clinical placements at participating health care organizations

Summary CCP Database Today, the database includes: 31 Health care organizations 23 Nursing Programs 922 clinical placements –RN and LPN students –All 4 terms Fall; Winter; Spring and Summer Group and preceptorship clinical placements Have added 254 placements for a 38% increase in placements since launch.

The CCP Database Expansion Expanded to include 2 additional regions Southeastern Mass –44 health care organizations –20 nursing programs Western Mass –20 healthcare organizations –8 nursing programs

Ongoing Efforts and Development Pre Assessment and Post Implementation Evaluation Web Site Enhancements –Simplify process of updating placement data –Reduce the possibility of data errors –Give users better visibility and control of change process –Facilitate communication between clinical sites, nursing programs & nurse coordinator –Prevent unauthorized/duplicate placement requests and submissions

Ongoing Efforts and Development Long-term Sustainability –Are discussing regional approaches for ongoing funding to support continued development and expansion of the CCP model.
