Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 Quadrupole Measurements 25 Undulator Quads measured with the rotating coil. Final Magnet June 26 th. 17 Undulator quads fiducialized to their magnetic center. Final magnet June 30th. Tolerances Integrated gradient: no tolerance, measure transfer function, individual supplies Harmonics: no tolerance, small beam size, looking for big problems BBA center shift: ±3 microns, need to look at outliers, also change energy for BBA So far, all quadrupoles seem acceptable. Closer look at BBA outliers required.

Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 Undulator Tuning And Fiducialization Overview The tuning is going well Almost done with 33 (details to follow) Mounting feet standardization is progressing Problem with storage, need to re-fiducialize 15 undulators Repairs of un-tunable undulators have started Recent plan to increase K adjustment range The measurements look good Stable, low noise, … Hall probe, short coil, long coil measurements agree The reference undulator measurements are stable

Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 Storage Problem Summary The undulators in bldg 750 should be re-fiducialized. The trajectories and phases are ok. The average gap changed by about 1 micron. The magnetic axis shifted by about 200 microns in x. 200 microns → ∆K/K ≈ 1.8 × 10 -4 Tolerance ∆K/K = 1.5 × 10 -4 Bldg 750 re-measured undulators Bldg 33 “data point” in process.

Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 New: Extend K Adjustment Range Originally, only ±2.5 mm good field region could be achieved Originally, ±2.5 mm horizontal adjustment range required, but a larger range was desired New B x shims allow ±6 mm horizontal good field region Now we want to extend undulator horizontal adjustment range Need to solve beam pipe clearance problems

Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 New RFI Schedule General Plan (my view) 1) While we are waiting to install the undulators, we can re-fiducialize and fix the clearance problems according to this schedule. We start near the end and work backwards. 2) If commissioning is going well, we can install any remaining undulators “as-is”. a) The motion range will be restricted, but at the beginning where it is not as important. b) K may be slightly out of tolerance for the first few undulators. We can correct assuming bldg 750 undulators behave similarly. c) We can swap them and fix them after the machine is running. 3) This is in line with the Lehman committee’s desire to get the machine running without additional delays. * * Undulator commissioning starts # # Beam line commissioning starts

Zachary Wolf Undulator Tuning Statuswolf@slac.stanford.edu June 17, 2008 Conclusion Undulator quadrupole measurements are nearing completion. Production measurements of 33 undulators is nearly complete. New work has started. MMF throughput averaged 2 devices/month. Repairs of un-tunable undulators has started. Tuning accuracy is within the tolerances. The K adjustment range will be increased. Due to interference with the vacuum chamber in off-axis position, X and Y trajectory shims will be modified/replaced on all undulators. The undulators will be re-measured and re-fiducialized and have their shims replaced. Undulator Status 32 undulators went through rough tuning 31 undulators went through fine tuning 2 undulators are repaired 2 undulators RFI (with shims replaced) 1 undulator back from bldg 33, new temperature excursion test
