Hypermedia “The limits to learning is mostly self-imposed” Colin Rose

Hypertext It is beyond normal text and refers to a non-sequential, nonlinear method for organizing and displaying text. Nonlinear knowledge organization

Hypertext There are marked words (as italic or underlined or bold or colorful) that called as links. Main idea under designing hypertext as learning material is that learners reach the whole knowledge that they need by consuming little time.

Multimedia Multimedia is integration of more than one medium into some form of communication. Most commonly, it refers to the integration of media such as text, sound, graphics, animation, video, spatial modeling into a computer system.

Hypermedia Hypermedia is simply the marriage of multimedia and hypertext. In other words, hypermedia is a type of hypertext with photos, images, sound, animated images, video etc. The most pervasive characteristics of hypermedia is the node which consists of chunks of text, pictures, video clips and so on.

Hypermedia nonlinear Hypertext nodes World Wide Web sites Information Kioks Multimedia video photographs Video disks links graphics audio Has attribute Structures Composed ofDerived from Composed of Has example includes Hypermedia concept map

How to use hypermedia in the classroom 1.Portal (learning from computer) 2.Mindtool (learning with computer)

Portal Portals are user-friendly, customizable hypermedia. The distinctive features of the portal is reachibility from one point to many points that users need In other words, there is one host that guides and contains all the information, interest and needs of the users.

Educational Portal It contains Education administration system Measurement and evaluation, planning and administration tools Communication tools among the school, students, instructor and parents. Exercises, testing materials, experiments, research facilities, user specific study activities etc.

Educational Portal Instructor can use e-portal as a platform for their course sites and its related components such as  Putting lecture notes, syllabi, grades  Creating forum discussions  Assigning homework,  Announcing news related to course,  Any other facilities

Features of an effective Educational Portal  Portal homepage should not be complex.  Nodes and links should be clear, understandable and meaningful.  Students do not live feeling of the lost.  Site should contain every information that students need in a organized way.

Features of an effective Educational Portal  Portal sides should be user-friendly e.g. Maximum six type of color should be used in one site Background color should be chosen gray or pastel color Video, image, sound should be used so that students understand content better, Video or sound materials can be watched or listened more than one time.

Examples of Educational Portal

Hypermedia as Mindtool Hypermedia construction It is an example of “knowledge as design”, which focuses on one of teachers and students as collaborators in the knowledge construction process. Designing and developing web sites has become the preferred mode of hypermedia construction.

Example of Hypermedia Example 2 http://www.eastgate.com/SandLoves/Welcome.html

Hypermedia production Accuracy of information in nodes Representation of information in nodes Quality of media representation Links are meaningful and descriptive.

Hypermedia production Screen design Nodes are organized in meaningful informative structures Purpose of hypermedia knowledge base clear to users.
