Diagrams/Visio, Week 4, Day 2  Goals: By the end of class, we will have  Practiced talking about, and evaluating, website designs  Generated content for use in the next assignment  Generated a share repository of this content (via E-post)

Warm-up  Team Task (1/5): Look at the heuristics in one or more of the papers. What are your reactions?  Reactions? Unfamiliar with concepts, jargon, heuristics tied to audience assumptions, vague, straightforward, prescriptive, limited?  Moving forward: If you were to start your evaluation right now, how would you start?

Evaluating with Heuristics  Applying the heuristics requires an understanding of the  Audience  Site itself  The plan  Think about audience  Describe site  Start evaluation

Audience  Two questions:  Who is the audience of the organization’s website?  What/Why: What would these audiences want to do w/ site? Why?   Example:  Who: Employees might use the site  What/Why: Employees might want to find phone numbers in order to get in touch with someone in order to schedule a meeting, …

Audience: Your task (2/5)  Think about your organization’s website.  Identify  Two audiences.  Idea about what each audience might do with the site and why  Post these ideas to E-post.

Describing a Site  Navigation: Nav column, Nav bar, spotlight links, embedded links,  Content: Amount, tone, topics, organization  Visuals: Colors, images, contrast, movement, function of visuals,   Example  What navigation?  What content?  What visual elements?

Description: Your task (3/5)  Explore your organization’s website, focusing on the first page.  Write a two sentence description capturing the navigation, content, and visuals of the site.  Post your responses to E-post.

Applying the Heuristics: Task (4/5)  One Heuristic: Identify 1 heuristic that the site either fulfills or fails to fulfill.  Explanation: Formulate your explanation for why the heuristic is, or is not, fulfilled.  Sharing: Write a single sentence to capture this mini-evaluation, and post to E-Post.

Completing the Evaluation (5/5)  Use the remainder of class to complete the evaluation.  The completed evaluation consists of (at minimum)  5 strengths– heuristics that are fulfilled by the site  5 areas for improvement – heuristics that aren’t fulfilled.  Post the final evaluation to E-post.
