Catalina Island Meeting 17-19 May, 20003 General Perspective on Proton Drivers for Muon Production: Many similarities with Spallation Neutron Sources (Beam Power, Energy Range). There exists considerable design experience, although no MW synchrotron has been built yet. Some problems like the required bunch compression to a few ns are common in Fusion Drivers, but not completely solved there. Proton Driver specifications are still vague: Rep. rate, # of bunches, -Collider constraints ?

Catalina Island Meeting 17-19 May, 200017 Conclusions: Combined with the Accumulator/Compressor rings operating with a 44 MHz RF system, it matches perfectly CERN's original Muon Rotation and Cooling Scenario. For these reasons it is the favorite CERN scenario and will be presented in the Neutrino Factory Study to be issued in early 2001. Its feasibility is still to be confirmed by the results of the HARP experiment on hadron production cross-sections for proton energies 2-16 GeV. The RCS scenarios are under study until the final choice of the proton energy. The 30 GeV RCS could ultimately complement the SPL Linac to supply protons for a Hadron Faciltity, a Muon Collider and for the SPS above its transition energy. LHC: Increased beam brightness and Luminosity CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso (CNGS): Higher proton flux Antiproton Declerator (AD): idem Neutron Time-of-Flight (nTOF) experiments: idem ISOLDE: idem The CERN SPL 2 GeV Superconducting Linac (Design Report to appear this summer) is a multipurpose facility from which most other CERN users would profit:
