Spectrometer Solenoid Update Michael S. Zisman Center for Beam Physics Accelerator & Fusion Research Division Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory MICO Meeting—RAL February 8, 2009

February 8, 2010MICO95:Zisman2 Spectrometer Solenoid Status Vendor completed lead tests (over the weekend) —6 of 6 300-A leads tested o 4 of 6 installed in the magnet as of Friday (see photo) —cool-down for last set of leads (60 A) done on Friday o should be installed in Magnet 2 by today Vendor expects magnet assembly to be completed this week —leads installed and thermal insulation in place —turret closed up and welded —pumping under way

February 8, 2010MICO95:Zisman3 Magnet 2 Lead Reinstallation As of last Friday, 4 of 8 leads reinstalled —remaining ones to be installed early this week

February 8, 2010MICO95:Zisman4 Next Steps (1-2 weeks) Pump down to dry out MLI Leak check turret area —if leaks found, fix them and repeat When leak-tight, begin cool-down When cold, continue with training of coils —goal to reach ~270 A Attempt to quantify thermal characteristics using internal heater —do we have “closed system”? o if not, can we last >6 weeks between top-ups? Decide at TB meeting in Riverside whether we go forward —magnet 1 assembly presently on hold pending this decision

February 8, 2010MICO95:Zisman5 Summary Seeing some light at the end of the tunnel —too early yet to tell whether it’s simply an oncoming train o encouraging signs at this point –should be clearer picture at Riverside meeting in March
