Energy 5: Global perspectives Workshop goals: Analyze energy needs, resources, and costs for LDCs, qualitatively and quantitatively Articulate your analysis strategies, assumptions, and limitations Discuss specific needs, options, and consequences Synthesize your learning in a brief team report 10 minute oral reports Tuesday or 1-page written reportsWednesday ?
5
Workshop activities 1.Choose your team and your nation (or region). Discuss roles of team members. Recorder? Time-keeper? 2.Compare each nation’s wealth to their energy consumption. Calculate the growth of both wealth and consumption. Discuss results. 3.Discuss a series of questions about the needs, resources, and costs for each nation. 4.Compare your results with those of the other team analyzing your nation (tomorrow?).
6
Wealth vs energy use How can we calculate the GNP per capita in 2004 (G 2004 ), given the GNP in 1992 (G 0 ) and the growth rate from 1980-1992 ( G/G)? Hint: Assume a constant growth rate, as a first approximation. How many years does the given growth rate span? __ How many years have passed since then? __ Write down an equation to find G 2004, if you know G 0 and ( G/G).
7
Examples of growth Simple example: If initial wealth G 0 =2 and growth rate was 50% during some time T, what would wealth be at the later time T? G T = G 0 +_____ = (___________)* G 0 Mozambique example: GNP in 1992: G 0 =60 dollars per capita Growth rate from 1980-1992: ( G/G)= -3.6 % over a time period of T = ___ years Growth rate from 1992-2004: GNP in 2004: G 2004 =

Workshop and looking ahead: Workshop: 1 hour for Activity 1 analyses. BREAK 1+ hour for Activity 2 discussions Choices to make together today: 1. Tomorrow: Spend class time after debate on Discussing workshop results with other teams OR working together on calculus? 2. Workshop reports: 10-minute team oral reports Tuesday OR 1-page team written summaries on WebX Wednesday?
