1 Working Group II Wind Park on Spectacle Island Josh Remolina Jocelyn Burke Manlok Yu Reneé Robicheau EEOS 324: CZM

2 Project Goals What is a wind park? Location? Benefits? How will it be implemented?

3 About Wind Parks Wind Parks consist of wind turbines that generate clean power Average height 400 ft 20 ft base diameter 200 ft rotating diameter of blades 16 rpm

4 Description The project entails building a wind park on Spectacle Island to power the sewage treatment facility on Deer Island

5 Deer Island

6 Location North drumlin on Spectacle Island Will not disturb fragile marine ecosystem No issues with boating navigation Productive use of landfill made island Suitable height for wind capture Will not interfere with Logan flight patterns No migratory bird flight patterns

7 Flight patterns for Logan Airport

9 Benefits Provide clean power to a one of a kind sewage treatment plant Further cleaning of Boston Harbor while not adding pollution In the average year, pollution from power plants cost Massachusetts residents 78,000 lost work days, 441 premature births, 104 hospital emergency room visits and 8,800 asthma attacks.[1] The cost from burning coal, which comprises more than half the US electric production, is even higher than most other fuels. Coal dust kills 2,000 US miners yearly, and since 1973 the federal black lung disease benefits program has cost $35 billion[2] Health and environmental costs bring the total price for coal- based energy to $0.055 to $0.083 kWh.[2] In comparison the cost of producing electricity from wind energy has steadily declined by more than 80% since the early 1980s.[3] Sources: [1] The Particulate-Related Health Benefits of Reducing Power Plant Emissions, Abt Associates, 10/2000 [2] Science Magazine 8/24/01 [3] American Wind Energy Association [4] map: www.capewind.orgwww.capewind.org www.nrelgov/wind/images/wherewind800.jpg

10 How? Project will be funded by private investors Existing underground cables will transmit power from Spectacle Island to Deer Island Experts from Netherlands will assist with the project Parts of wind turbines will be shipped to Spectacle Island Assembly of turbines will be on the island Overall 10 small and 4 large wind turbines will be constructed
