The notes today are designed to focus your attention on what and how to revise between now and the exam – We remind you that questions can be drawn from the whole of the module and as such the following notes are for guidance Revision Hints

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 2 Revision – what to use? Use the : module PowerPoint slides module practical links and learning from the assignment work module schedule reading recommendations Computing and Computer Weekly articles – library resources As you are masters students you need to show: evidence of reading, depth of reading Critical appraisal of news/trends/investigation Reflections on current issues within business and IT

OOSSD Week 12 Common sense tips Helps to read the question No marks for a wonderful answer which does not answer the question Allocate your time sensibly Don’t ramble – try and plan your answer Do not just dump down facts in a random order Helps if we can read what you have written Time: 1 hour 5 minutes to read the questions & make quick notes 45 minutes for the question About 1 minute per mark Slide 3

OOSSD Week 12 Common sense tips Be expansive – you’re in charge….don’t shrink into a small amount of writing – you need to expand/explore your answer Do not try and cram for this exam You need to read and think about the reasons behind the subjects DO NOT try and cram lots of facts/figures – low value Slide 4

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 5 Exam structure Both questions use a simple scenario You have just joined a small company and need to educate your manager about some software design issues Explain strengths and weaknesses Give (and justify) advice Explain and justify details Use diagrams where asked for and when you feel it helps your written answer

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 6 Revision topic hints You need to be able to “discuss or describe or explain or appraise” the question/answer Discuss ……so discuss the topic – compare and contrast and put forward a closing argument Describe/explain usually used to show knowledge of a technology/build of something Critically comment……be critical of the subject area – what is good/bad about the subject matter

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 7 Exam Learning outcomes Cross Reference to module descriptor learning outcomes: 1. HAVE A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF ONE OBJECT ORIENTATED METHOD DOWN TO DETAILED DESIGN.Analysis 3. BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE ISSUES OF PATTERNS AND FRAMEWORKS IN OBJECT ORIENTATED DEVELOPMENT.Analysis 4. BE AWARE OF THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN OO TECHNOLOGY BY SUCH BODIES AS THE OMG (OBJECT MANAGEMENT GROUP). Analysis

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 8 Appraisal of O-O What are the advantages and disadvantages of OO? – you need to be able to critically appraise O-O Includes Mirrors real world models Easier for teams to work together SE is not like the real world so rationale may be invalid!

OOSSD Week 12 UML and OO Why use the UML? Benefits Costs What are the alternatives? How many diagram types? Why so many? UML isn’t simple. Why? UML is a standard. Is this important? Slide 9

OOSSD Week 12 Practical Security Issues Why use client-server systems? Benefits Costs What are the alternatives? What are the weaknesses of simple websites? Describe and comment on injection attacks a good example of potential weakness is the SQL injection attack Slide 10

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 11 Design Patterns How do patterns help O-O software engineering? Benefits Disadvantages What patterns are available – be able to describe two Illustrate where appropriate Reference OOSSE schedule week 6

OOSSD Week 12 Slide 12 Helpful reading for design patterns http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/librar y/j-jsppatt/index.html http://www.jspolympus.com/JSP/JSPDesig nPatterns.jsp http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-11- 2004/jw-1101-viewhelper.html
